About Featured
When you engage me for a performance, understand that I prioritize the acoustic integrity of the Delhi Gharana. Whether it is a solo baithak or a fusion ensemble, I require a mandatory 60-minute sound check before your event begins. My Tabla technique relies on precise fingerwork that is sensitive to microphone placement, so having the right monitoring setup is essential to ensure the audience hears the true tone, not just the volume.
My musical journey is defined by the Delhi Gharana, the original school of Tabla. My training under Ustad Chhamma Khan was not just about learning beats, but about mastering the 'Nikash', or the specific touch that produces clear, resonant sounds.
The Performance Range
I bring this discipline to every show, whether it is a traditional solo recital or a modern fusion project.
- Classical Solo: These performances are deep dives into rhythmic cycles. Expect to hear complex forms like Kayeda, Rela, and Tukra, all played with the rigorous structure that defines our Gharana. These are perfect for intimate gatherings or music circles.
- Jugalbandi & Ensemble: Music creates dialogue. I have spent years performing in 'sawal-jawab' (musical duels) with Sitar, Sarangi, and Pakhawaj players. In these settings, I focus on the interplay between instruments, creating a balanced, conversational rhythm that lifts the energy of the event.
- Fusion & Percussion: For larger concerts or cultural festivals, I lead percussion ensembles that integrate diverse sounds. We combine the classical Tabla with Djembe and other instruments to create a global sound while keeping the rhythmic foundation rooted in Indian tradition.
Why the Sound Matters
Tabla is a subtle instrument. Unlike electronic kits, it is an acoustic instrument that reacts to humidity, temperature, and touch. My performances require high-quality microphones for both the bass (Bayan) and treble (Dayan) sides to capture the intricate mathematical patterns of my playing. This is why I insist on pre-show coordination; it ensures the music sounds exactly as it should, honouring the tradition I represent.
