Pottery Workshops & Community Events
Welcome to our space in Byculla. We believe pottery is 'riyaaz'—a dedicated practice—and this is where we come together to create, learn, and celebrate.
Our studio comes alive during Ganesh Chaturthi. This eco-friendly idol, made from our own studio clay, sits at the heart of our celebration, surrounded by offerings and decorations created by our community.
We believe in learning from the masters. Here, renowned artist John Dix gives a live pottery demonstration, sharing his techniques for creating expressive forms like this stretch platter with an engaged audience.
The studio transforms for a Ghatam Tarang performance, where the clay pot becomes a divine musical instrument. These evenings connect our craft to its deep cultural roots, filling the space with rhythm and soul.
We were honored to host Kazuya Ishida from Bizen, Japan. In this demonstration, he shapes a large vessel on the wheel, sharing the powerful and precise techniques of traditional Bizen-style pottery with our community.
The entire studio family gathers for a group photo during our Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. This picture captures the joy and togetherness that defines our community, surrounded by the beautiful decorations and festive spirit.
Our studio courtyard becomes a stage for vibrant cultural performances. Here, a group of Rajasthani folk musicians fills the evening with traditional songs and instruments, creating an unforgettable atmosphere for our guests.
The intense glow of the Raku kiln during a firing workshop. This dramatic process, where pieces are pulled from the kiln while red-hot, is a hands-on experience we offer for artists to explore spontaneous and unique glaze effects.
Beyond pottery, we are a family that celebrates together. This video captures the fun and warmth of our annual Christmas barbecue, complete with festive decorations, good food, and great company.
About Featured
When you create a piece here, the work does not end when you step away from the wheel. We handle the entire technical journey, from glazing your work to firing it in our kilns. You get to focus on the sculpting and the hand-building, and about three weeks later, your finished ceramic piece is ready for you to take home.
At Studio White & Gray, we believe that pottery is a dialogue between the maker and the clay. Located in the historic Byculla mill compound, our studio is designed as a community hub rather than a traditional classroom.
We structure our time around the rhythm of the craft. Our Raku firing workshops are a highlight, offering a hands-on experience where you witness the chemical transformation of glazes in a high-temperature outdoor kiln. It is a messy, intense, and rewarding process. For those who enjoy the connection between art and sound, our studio Baithak nights turn our workspace into a stage, where the deep, resonant tones of the Ghatam—also a clay pot—bring the room to life.
Our calendar is also deeply tied to the city's rhythms. During Ganesh Chaturthi, we host workshops where participants sculpt eco-friendly Ganesha idols using natural, chemical-free terracotta clay. We even perform the visarjan right here in our on-site artificial pond, ensuring the cycle of clay returning to nature is honored.
Whether you are joining a masterclass with international artists or just trying the wheel for the first time, you are entering a space where we share tea, stories, and the occasional barbecue. We invite you to join our circle, get your hands dirty, and discover the discipline of clay.
Studio White & Gray
I am Sandeep. I started this studio because I wanted a space that felt like home, where practice meets community. Whether you are here for an intensive masterclass or just to get your hands dirty, you are welcome to join our circle.
