New Life for Old Sarees
Don't let your cherished old sarees sit in a closet. I can transform them into beautiful new dresses, gowns, or kurtas, blending precious memories with modern style.
Here’s an Indo-western dress I created from an old saree. I used the rich green fabric for the skirt and the pallu's design for the embroidered bodice, creating a unique fusion outfit.
This anarkali-style gown was upcycled from a client's treasured saree. I kept the original border at the bottom and designed a modern silhouette, perfect for special occasions.
A closer look at the back of the dress made from an old saree. I added these custom tassels and a tie-up detail to give the traditional piece a playful and modern touch.
About New Life for Old Sarees
When you bring your saree to my Kamothe studio, we do not just cut fabric. I examine the border and pallu placement first to ensure your new dress keeps its signature traditional look, while adding canvas fusing for structure and a wrinkle-free finish. It is all about giving your favourite memories a second life you will actually wear.
Transforming an old saree into a fresh outfit is one of my favourite parts of the job. You have the fabric, which likely carries sentimental value, and I have the design tools to make it fit your current style. Whether it is an Anarkali, a gown, or a fusion dress, the process starts with a simple conversation about what you want.
How the Upcycling Process Works
- Consultation: We sit down and look at your saree. We decide which parts of the border to keep for the sleeves, hemline, or a belt, and how to use the pallu for the bodice or back details.
- Structural Foundation: A saree fabric is often soft, so I include 3 to 4 meters of quality cotton or butter crepe lining. I also use canvas fusing in the yoke to ensure the outfit has a structured, professional finish rather than looking flimsy.
- Finishing Touches: I add invisible zip closures, hook-and-eye safety, and even create matching fabric tassels or dori ties to make it feel like a completely new, high-end piece.
Why Choose Upcycling?
It is not just about sustainability. It is about taking an heirloom piece that might otherwise be tucked away in a trunk and turning it into something functional. Many of my clients bring me wedding sarees or gifted pieces from their mothers, and seeing them wear these fabrics again as modern Anarkalis or gowns is truly the best part of my work.
If you are in Navi Mumbai and have a piece you are not sure what to do with, bring it to my Kamothe studio. We will look at it together and figure out a pattern that works with your fabric's weight and flow. Even if you are unsure about the design, I can guide you through options like box-pleat gowns or fusion sets that make the most of your existing embroidery and borders.
