About Honored Collaborations with Mandals
Creating a large-scale murti is a massive responsibility, and I make it a point to host Mandal members at my Lalbaug karkhana. We sit together, finalize the posture, the fabric for vastralankar, and the facial expression, ensuring the final idol captures the exact devotion the committee envisions for their pandal.
When a Mandal trusts me with their Bappa, it is not just a commercial contract. It is a long-term collaboration that begins months before the first line is drawn. Large-scale murtis require precise engineering, not just artistic vision.
The Engineering Behind the Art
For idols exceeding 8 feet, the structural integrity is non-negotiable. I use heavy-duty welded iron armatures to ensure the idol survives transport vibrations and remains stable throughout the festival days. The base is built with reinforced wooden trolleys, complete with wheel-locking provisions for safety.
Crafting the Divine
- Material: I utilize commercial-grade Plaster of Paris (POP) reinforced with jute fiber, creating a durable structure that withstands both the weight of the accessories and the environmental conditions of an open pandal.
- Vastralankar & Styling: My signature is the traditional vastralankar. I use real silk and Paithani fabrics for the dhoti or saree, draped with the same care as I would for a human.
- Finishing: For Mandal murtis, the details are scaled for distance. I focus on muscular anatomy and expressive facial features that look powerful and benevolent even to devotees standing at the back of the pandal.
The Collaboration Process
I limit my commissions for large mandals to maintain the quality of my work. Once the booking is confirmed, I invite committee members to the karkhana to verify the clay structure before final painting begins. We handle everything, including onsite assembly if the idol dimensions exceed standard transport limits. If your Mandal is looking for a murtikar who respects the sanctity of the festival as much as the aesthetic, let us talk about your vision for this year.
