A look at the draping process for Lalbagchi Mata. Here, I am carefully arranging a traditional green saree, ensuring the pleats and fall of the fabric give the murti a lifelike and graceful appearance.

For the sixth day of Navratri, I had the honor of draping the Swami Aai idol in a magnificent magenta and purple saree. The video shows the final look, complete with jewelry and a serene expression.

About Divine Devi Idols for Navratri
Achieving the perfect drape on a Devi idol requires more than just fabric. I use specialized binding and pleating techniques that ensure the saree stays secure throughout the nine days of Navratri, even with daily rituals and flower garlands. Whether you need a traditional Nauvari drape or a specific color scheme based on the daily tithi, I ensure the idol remains steady and maintains its divine appearance.
For Navratri, the process of bringing the Goddess into the home is deeply personal. In my Lalbaug karkhana, I focus on the structural integrity of the idol using Shadu Mati (natural clay) while balancing the artistic requirement of traditional vastralankar (idol draping).
The Process
Every commission begins months ahead. I sculpt the anatomy to allow for natural, flowing drapery. Whether you need a 2ft home idol or a 4ft statue for a larger setup, the surface finishing is critical; I perform meticulous sanding so the fabric sits correctly without snagging.
Vastralankar & Styling
Draping a Devi idol is a specific art. I do not use pins that damage the clay. Instead, I use binding techniques that respect the sacred nature of the murti. I focus on:
- Authenticity: Using real silk, Paithani, or velvet fabrics that mimic traditional attire.
- Color Logic: Coordinating the saree color based on the specific day of Navratri or the family's preferred puja tradition.
- Adornment: Applying jewelry and floral garlands securely so they remain undisturbed throughout the festival.
If you are planning for Navratri, please reach out early. Because I personally handle the sculpting, facial features, and the final draping, I can only take a limited number of commissions to ensure every idol receives the attention it deserves.
