About The Art of Vastralankar: Idol Draping
True vastralankar is not just about wrapping fabric around clay; it is about respecting the anatomy of the murti. I use specialized pleating techniques, often employing real Paithani or silk, to ensure the drape sits perfectly without damaging the delicate Shadu mati surface. Whether it is a home Ganpati or a large-scale Devi idol, my focus is on creating a look that is both majestic and authentic to traditional aesthetics.
When I drape a murti, I am finishing the puja. Every idol that leaves my Lalbaug karkhana undergoes a meticulous process of vastralankar to achieve a divine, lifelike look. It starts with the fabric selection. I work with high-quality silk, Paithani, or velvet, depending on the deity's form and the specific festival requirements.
The Process & Technique
For Navratri Devi idols, I focus on the Nauvari drape, ensuring every pleat is aligned to handle heavy ornaments like the Thushi and Nath. One common mistake is using sharp pins that can scratch the Shadu mati (clay) surface. My technique involves careful folding and fabric-safe fastening that keeps the drape secure throughout the festival, even if the idol is moved for transport or visarjan.
Customization for Your Celebration
- Matching Themes: Whether it is the color-coded days of Navratri or a specific traditional look for Ganeshotsav, I coordinate the fabric, jewelry, and styling to match the theme of your mandal or home.
- Handling Different Sizes: For home Ganpatis (2ft), I use miniature fabric styling that maintains proportion. For large Mandal idols (8ft+), I work with your provided 9-yard sarees or dhotis, managing the weight so the fabric does not sag or lose its shape.
- Availability: This is a labor-intensive art form. I bring the same detailing I use for the big pandals into your living room. Please book early, especially during the festival season, as my schedule fills up months in advance.
