We bring the exact syllabus from Okinawa to our Honbu Dojo. See how our students master the Bo staff, Sai, and Tonfa in our traditional Kobudo classes.

A wide view of a Kobudo class in session. Students are practicing Bo kata, moving together with precision and discipline, which is a fundamental aspect of our Shorin-ryu Shorinkan training.

Female students leading a Bo staff drill. Our classes have a strong and growing number of women who are dedicated to learning traditional martial arts and self-defense.

Young students practicing with the Bo staff. It is never too early to start learning Kobudo, as it builds coordination, discipline, and confidence from a young age.

Students of different belt levels training together. This clip shows a mix of red and blue belts practicing their Bo staff forms, demonstrating our inclusive learning environment.

A synchronized Tonfa practice session. The Tonfa is a versatile weapon for both offense and defense, and mastering its movements is a challenging and rewarding part of our curriculum.

A class transitioning from empty-hand drills to weapons training. This shows how Kobudo is seamlessly integrated into our overall Karate-do curriculum as students advance.

About In the Dojo: Weapons Training in Action

You don't need to purchase or bring your own equipment to start. We provide all necessary gear at the dojo, from Bo staffs to Tonfas, so you can walk in and focus entirely on your form. Our classes are mixed-level, which means you will learn the basics alongside more experienced students, allowing you to quickly understand the rhythm and discipline required for these traditional Okinawan weapons.

Kobudo is not an add-on or a side hobby at our Honbu Dojo. It is an integral part of the Okinawa Shorin-ryu Shorinkan Karate-do curriculum. When you step onto our mats, you are training in the same weapons systems taught in Okinawa, without shortcuts or modern, watered-down variations.

We focus on three primary traditional weapons:

  • Bo (Staff): A six-foot wooden staff that develops your coordination, balance, and striking power.
  • Sai (Truncheon): These require sharp wrist action and are excellent for mastering blocks and counter-attacks.
  • Tonfa (Handle): A deceptive weapon that teaches the importance of rotation and body mechanics in both defense and offense.

Whether you are an adult beginner or a junior student, the training philosophy remains the same. You start with the foundational stances and simple movements, eventually working your way up to complex katas and weapon sparring (Kobudo Kumite). As you progress, these weapons become an extension of your karate practice.

We host classes in Bengaluru at our Panduranga Nagar facility, where we utilize professional EVA interlocking mats for safety during intense drills. Because we are an authentic federation, this training is directly linked to your belt grading. If you are serious about becoming a complete martial artist, you will find that Kobudo provides the practical depth that simple empty-hand karate sometimes misses. If you have any doubts about your current fitness level or experience, just talk to us at the dojo—our training is designed to accommodate everyone from total novices to advanced black belts.

Since 1992, I have been teaching the real deal, bringing the exact Shorin-ryu Shorinkan syllabus from Okinawa straight to our dojo floor. Kobudo isn't a side project here; it’s an essential part of becoming a complete martial artist, and we make sure every student gets the same traditional training I received from my teachers.
