Every year, I lead a dedicated group of students to Okinawa, the birthplace of karate, to train under grandmasters and bring the authentic Shorin-ryu syllabus back to our dojo.

A view of the Okinawa Karate Kaikan, a modern facility built to preserve the cultural heritage of traditional karate. This is a key destination during our annual trips to Japan.

About Our Annual Pilgrimage to Okinawa

These are not leisure trips; they are intensive immersion camps where our students train, grade, and compete under the watchful eyes of the masters who hold the syllabus we practice. When we return, the discipline and precision we bring back from the Karate Kaikan directly shape the intensity of our classes in Bengaluru and beyond.

For over three decades, I have made it a point to travel to Okinawa—the birthplace of karate—to ensure our federation remains true to its roots. Whether we are preparing for the Traditional World Karate Championship or undergoing belt grading under Hanshi Minoru Nakazato, these trips define what the OSK Federation is about.

We visit the Karate Kaikan and historic sites like Shuri Castle not just to sightsee, but to understand the cultural context that birthed the Shorin-ryu style. Students who join these delegations get a rare opportunity to train in the same dojos and under the same pressure as the local practitioners in Japan. We focus on Kobudo weapons training, rigorous tournament preparation, and absorbing the authentic methods that cannot be learned from a textbook or video.

This commitment to the source material is why our students are recognized internationally. We come back with new insights, stricter techniques, and a renewed sense of purpose that we integrate into our daily training back in India. If you are serious about learning traditional karate, you are not just signing up for a class; you are joining a lineage that goes straight back to the masters in Japan.

I’m Shihan Suresh Kenichira. For 33 years, I’ve dedicated my life to the Shorin-ryu Shorinkan style, and these trips are the heartbeat of our federation. When we return, the discipline we learned in Japan becomes the foundation of every class I teach at our Honbu Dojo.
