About Weapons Training (Kobudo): Nunchaku & Bo Staff
At the dojo, I teach Nunchaku and Bo Staff as part of a comprehensive curriculum. It is not just about swinging a weapon; it is about learning the mechanics of leverage and fluid motion. For beginners, we start with the fundamentals of grip and basic rotations, ensuring safety while you build the dexterity required for more advanced sequences.
In my practice, Kobudo—the study of traditional weapons—is deeply integrated into the Kalri-N-Ryu style. I see these weapons as an extension of the body.
When we train with Nunchaku, the focus is on speed, ambidexterity, and wrist flexibility. It requires a high level of concentration, as the weapon moves as fast as your mind. You will learn to control the movement through rhythm and flow, rather than just raw force.
For the Bo staff (laathi), the training is quite different. It teaches you about range, leverage, and full-body movement. We work on various blocks, strikes, and spins that utilize the entire length of the staff. It is excellent for developing core strength and understanding spatial awareness.
Safety is non-negotiable. We conduct all training on high-density 25mm EVA foam mats, so you can practice takedowns and weapon drills without unnecessary injury.
These sessions are available at my academies in Nagarbhavi and Chandra Layout, Bengaluru. Whether you want to improve your existing karate practice or are interested in weapons training as a standalone skill, the focus remains on discipline and consistent practice. You do not need prior experience to start, but you do need the patience to learn the basics before attempting the more complex routines you see in my videos.
