My Mehendi Art and Creative Process
A behind-the-scenes look at my practice sketches, teaching demos, and the hard work that goes into every design.
This is me in my element, focused on creating a design for a client. I often use a reference photo on my phone to ensure the design is exactly what they want.
A proud moment for me at a certificate ceremony for one of my mehendi batches. It brings me so much joy to see my students succeed.
A video from one of my mehendi classes in Kamothe, Navi Mumbai. I am giving a hand demo to my students, who are watching with great concentration. For them, 'swapne khari hotat' (dreams are coming true).
One of my students happily showing the demo design I created on her arm. She says she will try to replicate it, which makes me a very proud guru.
A sheet of my practice work, showing different 'cutwork' or negative space filling techniques. I am always practicing to improve my skills.
A video of me practicing cutwork fillings on paper. This is an important skill that I teach in my advanced mehendi classes.
Practice sketches of bridal figures, including a dancing couple and a bride. I draw these figures many times to perfect their form and details.
About this collection
My work isn't just about the final bridal look; it is about the hours spent on paper first. You will see me practice new cutwork fillings and sketch detailed figures until they are perfect. When I teach my students in Kamothe, we don't just trace lines; we learn how to create depth and structure so that every design we put on skin looks sharp and stays clean.
Everything you see here is part of my daily routine at the studio. I believe that true skill comes from constant practice, whether it is mastering a new cutwork filling or refining the shading on a portrait. I spend a lot of time sketching before I ever touch a cone to someone's skin.
Why Process Matters
When I teach my batches, I don't just show them the result. I show them the steps. We practice drawing figures—like a bride playing a flute or a dancing couple—on paper over and over. This is how we ensure that when a client asks for a custom portrait, I can execute it with precision. If you are learning with me, expect a 'tough-love' approach. We will keep practicing until your lines are fine and your shading has depth.
My Techniques
- Cutwork Fillings: I use this to create high contrast in my designs, making the henna stain pop against the skin.
- Portrait Work: I specialize in shading techniques that bring deities, gurus, or couples to life.
- Custom Sketching: I don't use ready-made patterns for bridal events. I sketch your story first, ensuring the composition works before I begin the application.
Whether you are looking to book me for your event or you are interested in joining one of my upcoming classes in Navi Mumbai, this section shows you the level of detail I bring to every single session.
Priya Phanase
I started Shades of Mehendi a decade ago, but honestly, it still feels like day one. My students are my biggest motivation; we sit, we practice, and we turn those sketches into real art. If you want designs that tell a story or if you are looking to pick up a cone and start your own journey, I am right here.
