Architectural Pavilions and Spatial Installations
We build temporary and permanent installations to explore architecture in its purest form. These projects are exercises in creating atmosphere, framing light, and finding stillness amidst the noise.
The Durall Pavilion, a black structure designed as a place of pause and peace amidst the cacophony of a product exhibition. It could be a church, a meditation hall, or a garden folly; we designed it to be all of the above.
The Durall Systems Pavilion was a temporary build, an all-black mesh form connecting two extra-large minimal windows. It horizontally frames a garden, creating a space for quiet introspection.
Another view of the Black Pavilion, designed to showcase windows by framing a garden. The space became a place to pause, a respite from the noise of the surrounding exhibition.
Looking out from the Black Pavilion into the garden it frames. The dark, porous mesh walls create a stark contrast with the vibrant green of the plants, heightening the sense of being in a sanctuary.

Another view of the pavilion in black and white, capturing the quiet interactions of visitors within the space. All architecture, permanent or temporary, must allow for moments of pause.
A visitor opens the large pivoting door of the Durall Pavilion. The act of entering the space is a transition from the busy exhibition hall into a calm, contemplative environment.
The vertical window in the Durall Pavilion frames a "line of light," almost like a temple to a saber. This installation was about creating powerful, emotional moments through architecture.

About Architectural Expressions: Pavilions & Installations
The Durall Pavilion was an exercise in silence. We constructed an all-black mesh form within the Nesco exhibition sheds, designed specifically to showcase minimal windows. By framing a single line of light and a living garden, we created a sanctuary. This project serves as a reminder that architecture, even when temporary, must carve out a place to breathe.
Architecture is often assumed to be permanent, but we believe its greatest utility lies in how it shapes experience, whether it stands for a day or a decade. Our pavilion work, like the Durall installation, is about controlling the environment to evoke emotion. We use specific architectural tools to achieve this: porous materials like expanded mesh to modulate light, and precise framing to curate views.
Designing for Atmosphere
When we take on pavilion projects, we do not focus on the structure itself. We focus on the 'between'—the space between the viewer and the landscape, or the viewer and the light. In the case of the Durall Pavilion, the goal was a respite from the cacophony of an exhibition floor. We used a vertical window to frame a 'line of light' and a horizontal aperture to pull the garden into the dark, quiet interior.
The Life of an Installation
Sustainability is not just about solar panels; it is about the lifecycle of a build. This entire pavilion was designed to be dismantled. It has already moved from the chaos of an exhibition to a new life in a quiet countryside location. This is the 'listener's approach' we take to all our work: respecting the material and the site enough to ensure the structure can evolve, adapt, and continue to exist rather than end up in a landfill.
Craft and Intent
Whether we are building a meditation hall, a garden folly, or a temporary product showcase, our intent remains identical. We apply the same level of joinery, material honesty, and spatial planning to our installations as we do to our residential housing and institutional projects. If you have an idea for a space that needs to capture a specific feeling, we are ready to build it.
Spasm Design
We are architects who believe in the power of light, material, and quiet. Whether designing a permanent home or a temporary pavilion, we strip away the excess to let the atmosphere speak. We prefer the raw, the honest, and the real.
