Vibrant Community Spaces Design in Mumbai
Shared spaces are where community happens. Whether it is a hostel lobby or a bustling campus cafeteria, I design areas that boost energy, foster connections, and stand up to heavy daily use.
We transformed this girls' hostel in Mumbai by focusing on its shared spaces. This video shows our work on the multi-floor lobbies, the selection of durable materials, and the installation of bold, graphic design elements that give the building its unique, powerful identity.
About Vibrant Community Spaces
When I designed that girls' hostel in Juhu, the brief was to create a home away from home. We did not just pick nice furniture. We used bold, empowering wall graphics and high-traffic, scratch-resistant materials because I know how intense hostel life can get. It is about creating a space that feels personal and safe, where students actually want to hang out, not just walk through.
Designing for High-Traffic Realities
When we talk about community spaces—hostels, campus lobbies, or co-living cafes—we are talking about areas that take a beating. My approach is to marry durable execution with a vibe that keeps people coming back. In every project, I focus on three main pillars:
- Material Integrity: I prioritize scratch-resistant laminates, acid-resistant surfaces in lab or pantry areas, and high-traffic vitrified flooring. If it cannot handle a heavy backpack or a hundred students a day, it does not go in my design.
- Acoustic Comfort: Large halls and lobbies can become chaotic echo chambers. I use acoustic baffles and fabric wall paneling to keep the sound level comfortable, ensuring the space remains a hub for interaction rather than a source of stress.
- Identity Through Design: People thrive in spaces that speak to them. Whether it is a motivational quote wall in a hostel or a color-blocked study zone in a library, I use environmental graphics to give a building its soul.
My Design Process
I treat every institution like a living, breathing organism. We start with the floor plan to ensure the flow is logical. We look at the light and the existing architecture to see how we can make the space feel bigger. Then, we layer in the details—the lighting, the furniture, and the textures—that make the environment feel intentional. Designing for students or community members is not just about aesthetics. It is about creating environments where they can build their own stories, study effectively, and find a sense of belonging in a busy city like Mumbai.
