Advanced Pilates: Cadillac & Barrel Training
The Cadillac and barrel aren't just for show. They are precision tools that use springs and leverage to build deep strength and stability, transforming how your body moves.
This is an advanced challenge on the Cadillac, combining an inversion with a full split. It requires total body integration, from the strength in my arms and shoulders to the flexibility in my hips.
I will help you achieve your goals. This video shows me spotting a client through a challenging inversion, providing the support and confidence she needs to master the move safely.
The ladder barrel is amazing for spinal articulation and core strength. This sequence flows from a back extension into a full handstand, demonstrating a high level of control and mobility.
This sequence on the Cadillac shows a beautiful side-bending mermaid stretch. It lengthens the entire side of the body while challenging your oblique strength and balance.
I can't finish a session without some fun on the Cadillac. This video shows a fluid transition from a backbend into a bridge, highlighting the spinal mobility and strength that Pilates builds.
Teamwork makes the dream work. Here, I'm working with another instructor to try a new and very difficult partner move on the Cadillac. It's all about trust and communication.
This headstand variation on the Cadillac is all about shoulder mobility and stability. All the pressure is in my arms and shoulders, not my head, which is a key principle I teach for safe inversions.
About this collection
The Cadillac is often mistaken for a torture rack, but it is actually the most supportive tool I have. Those springs and bars provide the exact leverage you need to decompress your spine or isolate a weak muscle group that a mat session might miss. When we use it for inversions or deeper stretches, we are essentially using physics to help your body safely achieve ranges of motion that might feel impossible on your own.
Why Advanced Equipment Matters
Many people view equipment like the Cadillac or ladder barrels as 'advanced' territory. While they do facilitate incredible athletic movements, my role as a physiotherapist is to use them for targeted rehabilitation and strength building.
The Cadillac (Trapeze Table) This is the Swiss Army knife of Pilates. Whether we are doing a hanging pull-up or a simple spine stretch, the Cadillac allows me to adjust resistance so you are not fighting gravity alone. It is brilliant for:
- Spinal Decompression: Gentle hanging stretches that take the pressure off your vertebrae.
- Injury Rehabilitation: Isolating specific muscles while your injured limb stays supported.
- Safe Inversions: Building confidence to go upside down with the security of the frame.
Ladder Barrels & Arcs These pieces are unmatched for spinal articulation. If you spend your day hunched over a laptop in HSR, the barrel is your best friend. We use it to extend the spine, open the chest, and counteract that forward-head posture.
Is it right for you? You do not need to be an athlete to start here. Because I have a physiotherapy background, I do not throw you into an acrobatic move on day one. We use these tools to build the baseline strength required for your body to move without pain. Whether you are recovering from sciatica or just want to level up your existing practice, we will use this gear to help you move more effectively.
