Portraits of Dharavi
A close look at the daily rhythm of Kumbharwada. I spent time walking through these lanes to capture the grit, the smiles, and the craft of the people who make this community run.
A young girl's infectious laugh lights up a narrow lane filled with terracotta pots. Her expression captures the bright spirit that thrives within the hardworking community of Dharavi.
A worker in Kumbharwada shares a moment of lightheartedness amidst a day of hard labor. His smile and wave are a testament to the cheerful resilience I witnessed everywhere in the community.
An elderly woman, a master of her craft, gives final shape to a large earthen pot. This portrait highlights the generations of skill and tradition passed down among the potters of Dharavi.
A potter carefully inspects a fresh batch of diyas, or clay lamps, before they are fired. The sheer volume of his craft fills the frame, showing the scale of production in this small workshop.
In a small tea stall, a chaiwala expertly pulls tea, a daily ritual that fuels the community. This candid shot captures a slice of everyday life and commerce within the bustling lanes.
An elderly woman stands in a dimly lit alley, her gentle smile illuminated by a sliver of light. Her portrait tells a story of a long life lived with grace and strength.
A man takes a brief pause from his work, his smile warm and genuine despite the grime. This image is a candid portrait of the human element behind the industry of Dharavi.
A small child looks up from a sea of freshly made clay pots, her curious gaze creating a powerful connection. This overhead shot contrasts the innocence of youth with the world of labor she is growing up in.
A group of friends poses for the camera in a colorful alley. Their camaraderie and youthful energy bring a sense of vibrancy and hope to the street portrait.
Two children peer out from their doorway, one playfully balancing a pot on his head. It's a candid, playful moment that offers a glimpse into family life within the community.
About Portraits of Dharavi
When you book me for a documentary session, we are not doing staged studio setups. I focus on movement and available light to catch the real energy of your location. Whether it is in a workshop or a busy street corner, I move fast to document those unscripted, candid moments that tell a genuine story.
My photography is about the 'in-between' moments. In places like the Kumbharwada potter's colony in Dharavi, there is a rhythm to the work that does not need to be polished. I strip away the clutter to show the texture of the environment and the authentic expressions of the people living there.
When you work with me, expect a low-maintenance approach. I operate with natural light and whatever gear I can carry, keeping the vibe relaxed so the subjects stay comfortable. I do not rely on heavy retouching; the goal is to capture the colors, the raw emotion, and the character exactly as they exist.
For this type of street and documentary work, I prioritize a quick turnaround. I aim to deliver 30 to 40 fully edited, high-resolution images within five to seven working days, giving you vibrant, high-contrast shots that hold their own on social media or in print. If you have a specific location in Mumbai or beyond that tells a story, let's head there and start shooting.
