Kathak & Semi-Classical Dance Studio Creations
This is where I explore the roots of Kathak, blending tradition with contemporary expression. From studio sessions to rooftop solos, here is how I translate stories into movement.
A solo piece in a beautiful Anarkali, showcasing the grace and spins of Kathak-inspired movement. This was for a class I taught in Mumbai.
A semi-classical duet filmed in a beautiful garden setting. This piece blends two different styles of movement in harmony with the natural surroundings.
A graceful duet in colorful saris, blending semi-classical movements. This collaboration shows how two dancers can complement each other's styles.
A solo piece filmed on a rooftop overlooking the city. This choreography is an expression of freedom and joy, blending classical hand gestures with a sense of modern release.
Performing a semi-classical piece at the end of my class. I love to share my passion for this style, focusing on expression and storytelling.
A flowing solo piece that plays with the fabric of the skirt. This choreography is a blend of semi-classical grace and contemporary floorwork.
A serene moment captured during the filming of a semi-classical duet. The setting is as much a part of the story as the dance itself.
About this collection
My approach to the studio is simple: we mix strict technique with a lot of play. In these sessions, we don't just drill steps, we focus on how to use Kathak’s rhythmic complexity to tell your own story. Whether you are learning a semi-classical routine or experimenting with contemporary fusion, I prioritize movement that feels honest over movement that just looks correct.
The studio is my laboratory. It is where I deconstruct the traditional, fast-paced footwork of Kathak and allow it to breathe in new contexts. I believe that dance should be a safe space to explore, which is why my classes and sessions focus as much on the emotional connection to the music as they do on the technical precision of the form.
My Creative Process
When we work on semi-classical or fusion pieces, I look for the 'why' behind the movement. If we are choreographing a song like 'Kehna Hi Kya' or working on an original contemporary piece, I want you to understand the phrasing of the music.
- Rhythmic Phrasing: We break down complex tal (rhythmic cycle) structures into digestible movements.
- Storytelling: We use hand gestures (mudras) and facial expressions (abhinaya) to articulate narrative, not just aesthetics.
- Contemporary Fusion: I often blend classical Kathak with fluid contemporary styles, creating a unique vocabulary that feels relevant to modern music.
Whether you are joining me for a pop-up class in Mumbai, a workshop in London, or booking a private session to develop your own solo performance, we move at your pace. I encourage you to show up as you are—sweaty, shaky, and ready to learn. There is no judgment here, just a collective effort to grow as dancers and storytellers.
Saloni Saraf
I’m Saloni, a Kathak dancer who’s always got one foot in Mumbai, one in London, and my head in the clouds. I created Rangwang because dance is my way of feeling 'pal pal jeena'—living fully in every moment—and I want to help you find that same sense of freedom, whether you are a seasoned dancer or just starting out.
