The Art of Natural Materials and Craftsmanship
We believe buildings should breathe like nature itself. Our approach blends the earthiness of raw stone and lime with the precision of modern craft to build homes that are deeply rooted in their environment.
We are constantly experimenting with natural materials. This image shows a test panel of lime plaster with subtle patterns impressed upon its surface, a technique we use to add texture and a handmade quality to our walls.
A close-up of local Tandur stone, a material we are using in our third Coorg home. Its natural color variations and texture connect the building directly to the earth, creating floors and surfaces that feel authentic and timeless.
This laser-cut metal screen, inspired by Sanjhi art, is a prime example of our approach to modern craft. The intricate floral pattern, rendered in metal, creates a contemporary 'jali' that filters light and casts beautiful shadows, blending tradition with technology.
About The Soul of a Space: Materials & Craftsmanship
We do not believe in finishes that mask a wall’s character. When we use traditional lime plaster, it requires a 21 to 45 day curing process, allowing the structure to breathe and naturally regulate temperature. This approach is what gives our homes that cool, serene atmosphere even in the height of a Gurugram summer.
Architecture is more than form; it is a tactile experience. In our projects, we rely on a material palette that connects a structure directly to the earth. Whether it is the subtle, natural color variations of local Tandur stone or the textured honesty of hand-chiseled laterite masonry, every choice is made to imbue a space with a sense of place.
Our interest in craft is not about decoration, but about reinterpreting tradition for modern life. We use techniques like palm-leaf imprints on concrete ceilings to bring a subtle, garden-inspired texture into interiors. Similarly, our custom metal screens are inspired by the delicate Sanjhi cutwork, evolved into a contemporary jali that filters light and casts intricate, shifting shadows throughout the day.
For those interested in heritage restoration, our process is one of patience. We focus on structural stitching and lime-grouting to strengthen load-bearing walls without modern, invasive chemicals. We prioritize reclaimed materials, such as salvaged teak columns and rosewood beams, integrating them into new layouts to maintain the historical continuity of the site. Sustainability for us is not just a label; it is the practical result of choosing materials that age gracefully, allowing a home to evolve and remain relevant over decades.
