Mastering Outdoor Live Sketching for Art Exams
We take learning beyond the studio to teach you how to capture movement and real-life scenes, a critical skill for your Elementary and Intermediate drawing exams.
This video shows the real challenges and triumphs of live sketching. Our students learn to draw from memory when their subjects move, a critical skill for developing speed and observation.
A student fully absorbed in her work during an outdoor sketching session. We provide portable stools and boards so our artists can comfortably focus on capturing the scene in front of them.
Our students practicing side-by-side in a local park. This group setting allows for shared learning while each artist works on their individual composition and human figure sketching.
An over-the-shoulder view of a student mapping out the basic shapes and poses of people in the park. This initial step is crucial for getting the composition right before adding details.
A wider view of our elementary and intermediate students during a live sketching practice. You can see their intense focus as they translate real-life scenes onto their paper.
Every student finds their own subject to capture. Here, a student works on her pencil sketch, learning to quickly outline the posture and form of a person sitting on a bench.
Art is for everyone. In this live sketching session, we highlight the incredible work of one of our deaf students, who is brilliantly capturing the scene with focused observation.
About Outdoor Live Sketching: Drawing from Life
It is one thing to draw a still-life setup in our Vashi studio, but sketching a person walking through a park is a completely different challenge. This practice is vital because during the memory drawing section of your Elementary or Intermediate exams, the subject might not hold still, or your reference might disappear. We push our students to observe posture and proportions in real-time, helping you move past stick figures and learn to sketch with speed and accuracy.
When we head out for these sessions, we are doing more than just drawing; we are building your muscle memory. The exam is not just about producing a pretty picture. Examiners are looking for how well you understand perspective, how you handle complex human anatomy, and whether you can construct a scene from observation when the action is happening right in front of you.
We structure these sessions to replicate the pressure of exam day. You will learn to:
- Capture the Essence: Stop obsessing over tiny details and start by blocking out the main shapes and body proportions.
- Handle Moving Subjects: Learn to mentally 'pause' a subject in motion to finish your sketch, even after they have walked away.
- Build Your Memory Bank: Use these outdoor observations to improve your memory drawing skills, which is a major component of the Grade Certification exams.
Whether you are struggling with tonal values or just can't seem to get the human form to look natural, we are right there with you, offering corrections. It might sound a bit blunt when we tell you to fix a proportion on the spot, but that direct feedback is what gets our students consistently ready for their certification. We want you to feel confident, not just in your marks, but in your ability to sit anywhere and draw what you see.
