This was one of my most challenging and heartfelt commissions. A friend asked me to draw her mother's father, a man she had never seen, who passed away 43 years ago. Using her aunt's photo as the only reference, I created this memorial portrait to finally give her a face to connect with her beloved 'Appa'.
Art is about spreading joy. I saw this ajji selling mangoes on the street and was inspired by her hard work. I did a quick ballpoint pen sketch for her, and her smile was the greatest reward.

When I take on a commission, I do not just copy a photo, I look for the emotion. Even if you only have a damaged, blurry, or tiny old photograph of a loved one, I use careful reconstruction techniques to bring their features back to life on paper. I share a work-in-progress draft with you before the final shading, so we ensure the expression matches your memory perfectly.
My art is about preserving moments. Whether it is a tribute to a loved one who has passed or a celebration of your family's bond, I approach every sketch with the same dedication I give to my live portraits on the street.
I offer several distinct styles:
- Charcoal and Graphite: My go-to for timeless, soulful black-and-white portraits. This works best for memorial pieces where you want deep contrast and realistic texture.
- Scribble Art: A modern, energetic style using continuous lines. It creates movement and a unique depth that looks stunning on a feature wall.
- Ballpoint Pen: Ideal if you are looking for intricate, fine-detailed portraits that have a sharp, clean finish.
The Process
Every piece is hand-drawn on acid-free artist-grade paper. For my memorial portraits, which are often my most challenging work, I can merge multiple reference photos or even use a family member's photo to reconstruct a likeness of someone you have lost.
Once the drawing is complete, I apply a clear matte fixative spray to prevent smudging. Everything is framed in a 0.75 to 1-inch synthetic wood frame with glass, reinforced with multi-layer bubble wrap, and shipped safely anywhere in India.
