About Tributes to Icons & Inspirations
When I draw someone like Kuvempu or Puneeth Rajkumar, I do not just look at the photo for dimensions. I listen to their work, read their lines, or watch their moments until I feel the spark that made them who they were. That is how I capture not just the face, but the story in their expression.
Why I Sketch Icons
For me, drawing a legend is not just a technical exercise in shading or line work. It is an act of respect. Whether it is the depth in Rashtrakavi Kuvempu’s gaze or the vibrant energy of Puneeth Rajkumar, I focus on the 'mugdha nagu'—that innocent, genuine expression that defines their legacy.
My Process for Legends
- Research & Feel: Before I touch my charcoal pencil to paper, I spend time with the subject's work. I listen to their interviews or read their literature to understand the 'Roopa' (form) and 'Rasa' (essence) they carry.
- Texture & Light: I use high-contrast Steedtler graphite and charcoal powder to bring out the depth in their eyes. Every wrinkle or shadow is a part of their history.
- A3 & A4 Precision: I prefer larger formats for these pieces to ensure I can capture the fine details of their facial features accurately.
If you have a personal hero—a mentor, a parent, or an idol—whose memory you want to preserve in a framed pencil portrait, I approach those commissions with the same respect. Every portrait I draw is my way of keeping their stories alive.
