Fine Art & Portraits Rooted in Indian Heritage
My work in oil and acrylic captures the essence of Indian history, culture, and the mentors who have shaped my artistic journey.
My oil on canvas painting titled 'The great legendary Guru Devo Ravindranath Tagore'. This piece, now in a collection in London, is my tribute to his immense contribution to art and literature.

About My Art & Portraits
For my portraiture, I prioritize academic realism over stylistic improvisation. Whether I am capturing the depth in a mentor’s expression or the historic detail of a cultural icon, I work strictly in oil or acrylic to ensure the medium honors the subject's legacy and provides the tonal depth required for a true-to-life likeness.
My approach to fine art is disciplined and rooted in the teachings passed down by my gurus. When I paint, my focus remains on anatomical correctness, proper lighting, and perspective. I do not believe in short cuts; academic realism demands a structured process that begins with observation and ends with mastery of the medium.
The Process of Realism
I primarily work with oil and acrylic on canvas, as these mediums allow for the layering and blending necessary to bring a portrait to life. My subjects are rarely random; they are chosen to reflect our Bharatiya Aitihasik Sanskriti, or Indian historical culture. Painting figures like Rabindranath Tagore or dedicated teachers requires me to study their life and contribution, which informs how I apply color and composition on the canvas.
Working with Me
If you are interested in a commission, please note that I maintain a specific process to ensure the final piece meets the standard of my past award-winning work. We will discuss the subject, the emotional tone you wish to convey, and the historical or personal context.
For those interested in learning, I conduct training sessions at my studio in Nashik where we apply these same principles. We do not just paint; we study the human form and the history of art. Whether you are looking to commission a portrait or join my academic training program, I invite you to reach out and discuss how we can work together to create art that tells a meaningful story.
Rajesh Sawant
I am Rajesh Sawant, and for me, a canvas is a space to honor our history and my mentors. My studio in Nashik is a quiet space where we focus on discipline, anatomical accuracy, and the stories behind the faces we paint.
