Behind every character on stage is a story of construction. See how we turn simple materials into friends that spark joy.

A close-up of a female marionette we built. We use paper mache and simple fabrics to construct the head and body, and a bright red flower gives her a distinct character.

A hand gently adjusts the head of a puppet, showing the connection between the puppeteer and their creation. This is where the puppet begins to come to life.

Our team works together to set up a scene for a new project. This shows the collaboration that goes into every performance, from lighting to puppet manipulation.

A puppet lies on the stage before a show begins. This quiet moment captures the anticipation and potential before the story starts.

A puppet rests on a textured cloth, waiting for the performance to start. This image highlights the stillness before our characters spring into action.

My team member and I are practicing with a new marionette controller. Perfecting the subtle movements is key to making the puppet's performance believable.

About The Art of the Puppet

Building a puppet is a balancing act between physics and character. When I design a marionette, I focus on the weight of the cardboard and the tension of the fishing lines, as these technical choices define how the puppet will move during a story. For those joining our workshops, this is exactly where we start—understanding that a puppet is not just a toy, but a vessel for expression.

From Raw Materials to Storytelling

At PuppeTree, our process is deeply tactile. We believe that using simple materials like socks, cardboard, and upcycled fabric makes the art accessible. Whether it is a hand puppet for a quick story or a complex marionette for a performance, the goal is always the same: to create something that invites interaction.

Our Workshop Philosophy

We conduct our sessions in a traditional Baithak style, sitting on mats to keep the space open and grounded. This isn't just about glue and scissors. We walk you through:

  • Marionette Engineering: Understanding joints, counter-weights, and the crucial stringing techniques that give a character its unique walk or gesture.
  • Character Voice: How to breathe life into a creation through simple, effective voice modulation.
  • Story Architecture: How to script a short, meaningful story that connects with your audience.

Bringing Puppetry to You

Based in Bangalore, we take this craft to schools, community centers, and even private gatherings. If you are looking for a creative activity, we offer a 3-hour introductory session where you build your own functional puppet to take home, or a 3-day intensive course for those who want to dive into the engineering of string puppets.

Whether it is a sock puppet workshop for a group of curious putanis or a performance-led session for adults, we ensure that every participant leaves with the confidence to tell their own story. We provide all the raw materials, including tools like hot glue guns and cutting mats, in a safe, supervised environment.
