Meet the Master Artisans of Kumhar Gram
Step into the heart of Delhi's pottery traditions and learn directly from the families keeping the mitti (earth) craft alive in Uttam Nagar.
Meet Ghansham Bhaiya, a key member of our artisan community. Here he is preparing the clay, the very first step in the creation of our terracotta products. His dedication is an inspiration.
This is Ganu Bhaiya, another of our talented artisan partners, pictured in his workshop. He is surrounded by finished terracotta composters, a testament to his skill and hard work.
Dhaniya Bhaiya, a skilled craftsman, is seen here focused on his work. We are honored to collaborate with such dedicated individuals who bring generations of expertise to our project.
We stand proudly with our artisan partners and the terracotta composters we co-created. This is what community-led change looks like, a partnership that benefits both people and the planet.
This graphic introduces our beneficiaries from Kumhar Gram (Potter's Village). They are a community of highly skilled artisans with whom we have partnered to create a sustainable future for their craft.
A brief video tour of the Potter's Village in Uttam Nagar. This is where our partners live and work, in a place filled with the scent of the earth and the sight of beautiful, handmade earthenware.
About Our Artisan Community
When you visit our workshop space in Uttam Nagar, do not expect a polished, air-conditioned studio. You are entering a working pottery colony, a real community space where artisans like Ghansham Bhaiya and Ganu Bhaiya have been refining their craft for generations. It is raw, authentic, and unfiltered, offering you a rare, hands-on chance to learn traditional wheel-throwing from the masters themselves while directly supporting their livelihood.
Our pottery workshops are born from a partnership with Sonu Kumar Handicrafts in Kumhar Gram. This is not just a hobby class; it is an immersive look at how traditional earthenware is produced.
The Kumhar Gram Experience
We work with artisans who have lived and breathed pottery for their entire lives. When you join a session, you are not learning from a textbook—you are learning from the people who shape the clay that eventually becomes our terracotta home composters and gardening tools. The environment is open-air and rustic, giving you a genuine glimpse into the daily life of a potter's colony in North India.
Why We Do This
We believe in the concept of ‘Jan-Bhoomi’—the earth belonging to its people. Our workshops are designed to bridge the gap between urban life and rural craftsmanship. By participating, you help sustain these families against the influx of mass-produced, factory-made goods.
What To Expect
- Hands-on Guidance: Whether you are centering clay on the electric wheel for the first time or trying your hand at sculpting, you will be guided by master artisans.
- A Living Heritage: You will get a walkthrough of the colony, seeing traditional kilns and the sheer volume of work that goes into this craft.
- Takeaways: You get to take home the items you create in their raw, air-dry state. It is a tangible piece of the village you can keep.
If you want to experience the true 'mitti' culture rather than a sanitised classroom environment, this is for you.
