About Haircare & Styling
Hair photography is a technical balancing act between capturing fluid, natural movement and maintaining precise product details. Whether I am shooting a shampoo campaign where the hair needs to look voluminous and bouncy, or an advertisement for a styling tool where the focus is on sleek, frizz-free texture, I calibrate my studio lighting to freeze that specific motion while ensuring the product packaging and brand colors remain perfectly sharp.
My process for haircare photography is built on close collaboration with agency stylists, makeup artists, and brand representatives. When working with clients like BBlunt or Dove, the goal is to make the hair look healthy, aspirational, and commercially viable across all formats, from social media ads to large-scale billboards.
The Technical Approach
- Movement vs. Stillness: For campaigns focused on styling tools like hair straighteners or dryers, I use high-speed flash photography to capture clean, sharp lines. This ensures the hair appears smooth and well-defined without motion blur.
- Lighting for Texture: I use specific light modifiers, such as beauty dishes or large octaboxes, to highlight individual hair strands and create the glossy, healthy-looking finish that beauty brands demand.
- Color Accuracy: I prioritize color fidelity, particularly for hair color campaigns. I use calibrated monitors during the shoot to ensure the final image matches the product's Pantone shades, whether it is a deep brown or a vibrant copper.
Post-Production
My workflow includes high-end retouching tailored to advertising standards. This involves Dodge and Burn techniques to enhance the hair's volume and shine, along with precise composite stacking if we are combining model shots with product packshots. The final delivery is always formatted for its intended medium, ensuring the detail holds up on everything from mobile screens to print packaging.
