Coastal Chronicles: Seascape Photography in Karavali
From the fiery sunsets of Udupi to the rocky shores of Gokarna, this is my personal tribute to the Karavali coast. By using long exposure techniques, I aim to strip away the chaos of the tide and reveal the quiet, artistic soul of our ocean.
A classic, fiery sunset over the ocean at Udupi. The long exposure technique smoothens the water and creates beautiful reflections, turning the sky and sea into a painter's canvas.
A peaceful sunset with dramatic clouds and light rays. This is the kind of colourful, serene evening that makes coastal life so special.
Another stunning sunset, where the sky is ablaze with colour, reflecting perfectly on the wet sand.
A tranquil sunset scene, with a large rock in the foreground anchoring the composition as the waves gently recede.
An absolutely stunning October sunset in Udupi, with the sky exploding in shades of orange, red, and purple over a field of beach morning glory.
One of the most intense and colourful sunsets I have ever witnessed, captured in this short video. The entire sky and sea seemed to be on fire.
A monsoon sunset creates a dramatic mood, with dark clouds contrasting against the bright, colourful sky over the water.
A wide, panoramic view of the Udupi coastline at sunset, showing the unique geography where the river runs parallel to the sea.
A monochrome long exposure of the rocky Gokarna coast. Removing colour allows the focus to be on the texture of the rocks, the misty movement of the water, and the dramatic composition.
Another black and white long exposure from Gokarna, this time with the clouds also showing motion, creating a sense of dynamic energy.
About Coastal Chronicles: Seascapes of the Karavali & Beyond
Shooting the Karavali is rarely as straightforward as it looks. The coastline is often flat, which makes finding a strong foreground element crucial for a balanced composition. When I am out at Hejamady or Udupi, I am usually hunting for that specific rock or piece of driftwood to ground the frame before the long exposure kicks in to smooth out the waves. It is about patience and waiting for the right light, rather than just clicking away.
Many people assume capturing the coast is just about a wide lens and a good sunset. The reality is that the Karnataka coastline, particularly around Udupi and Mangalore, is deceptively flat. Unlike massive mountain ranges, you have fewer natural vertical elements to lead the eye. This is where composition becomes critical. I spend hours scouting for those specific details, like a tidal stream or a jagged rock formation at Gokarna, to act as an anchor for the frame.
Technically, I rely heavily on long exposure. By smoothing out the water and capturing the motion of the clouds, I turn a chaotic, noisy sea into a minimalist, dreamlike canvas. It transforms the familiar into something abstract and meditative.
I often get asked why I shoot the same location in both vibrant color and high-contrast monochrome. Color captures the raw energy of a sunset, especially those fiery oranges and purples we get in October. But monochrome is for when I want to strip away the distraction and focus purely on texture, form, and the mood of the ocean.
If you are looking for fine art for your space, these are not just snapshots. They are archival-grade prints designed to bring that coastal silence into your living room or office. Whether you want the drama of a monsoon sunset or the quiet solitude of a black and white rocky shore, these images are about finding stillness in a world that never stops moving.
