Soulful Water and Landscape Photography by Santosh Roy
Finding silence and reflection in nature’s vast waterways, from Kerala’s backwaters to the mountain rivers of Uttarakhand.
The sun sets behind a Chinese fishing net in Kochi, with a palm tree framing the scene. This is the quintessential Kerala coastal experience, peaceful and picturesque.
A compilation of moments from the coast, showing the vibrant lights of beach shacks at night, a serene sunset over the waves, and the quiet expanse of the shore during the day.
A river valley in the Jim Corbett region, seen under the soft light of the moon. The landscape takes on a quiet, mysterious quality at night.
The sun shines brightly over the flowing river and rocky banks in the Himalayan foothills. You can almost feel the warmth of the sun and hear the sound of the water.
The sun peeks over the hills, its first light touching the surface of the river. This is a quiet sunrise moment, full of hope and calm.
The golden reflection of the rising sun creates a path of light on the river's surface. It's these simple, beautiful moments in nature that I love to capture.
A wide view of the river valley at sunrise, with soft clouds in the sky. The landscape feels vast and peaceful as a new day begins.
A more intimate shot of the sun's reflection on the water as it rises over the hills. The contrast between the dark, flowing water and the bright light is captivating.
A minimalist photograph of the sun hanging over a calm body of water in the morning haze. The reflection on the water adds a touch of life to the serene scene.
Two towers stand like lonely sentinels in the water, shrouded in a thick, golden morning mist. This image has a very painterly and almost surreal quality.
About By the Water
I do not just take photos of water; I hunt for the quietest moment of the day when the light hits the surface just right. Whether I am using my Canon DSLR for deep landscape detail or my iPhone for spontaneous, candid reflection shots, my goal is to capture the stillness of the environment. If you are planning a shoot near water, we need to time it for the golden hour—that is when the water truly wakes up.
Chasing the Light on Water
Photography, for me, is about listening to what the land is saying. When I am shooting by the water, whether it is the backwaters of Kochi or the mountain rivers in Jim Corbett, I am looking for the texture of the light. Water is a living thing; it changes mood from the harsh clarity of noon to the painterly mist of the early morning.
My Approach
I combine my Canon EOS 80D with the flexibility of my iPhone 15 Pro Max to cover these sessions. The DSLR allows for those deep, high-contrast landscape shots that capture the drama of a river valley. However, some of the most authentic, soulful captures come from spontaneous moments on my phone.
- Golden Hour Sessions: I prefer shooting strictly around sunrise or sunset. The light is softer, the reflections are clearer, and the rush of the day fades away.
- Natural Elements: I don't believe in over-editing. I aim for moody, warm color grading that reflects what I felt when I clicked the shutter.
- Travel Documentation: I am happy to travel for full-day documentation, whether you are planning a trek in the Himalayas or a quiet retreat at a resort. We move together, documenting the journey, the local architecture, and the environment as we find it.
What to Expect
If you book a session with me, expect a collaborative, easy-going experience. We aren't just posing for portraits; we are telling a story. I provide a mix of high-resolution JPEGs and raw mobile content, perfect for sharing your journey as it happens. If you have a specific location in mind—a lake, a beach, or a hidden mountain pool—let me know. I am always looking for a new place to call home.
Santosh Roy
I am Santosh. For me, water is a mirror that catches the soul of a place, and I spend hours just watching how a river changes from dawn to dusk. I want to help you capture those quiet, peaceful moments where nature feels like it belongs to you.
