Behind the Scenes: The Real Work of Fashion Styling
People often think styling is just about picking beautiful clothes. It is actually about the sourcing trips, the fittings, and the teamwork that happens long before the camera clicks.
Behind every perfect shot is a dedicated team. This video gives you a peek into the styling process for a shoot with my favorite muse, Sonali Kulkarni. From the makeup chair to the studio floor, my team and I are there to manage every detail, ensuring the final look is exactly as we envisioned.
Part of my job is staying connected with the latest in fashion. Here I am at the launch of the Shanti Banaras store in Mumbai, a beautiful destination for ethnic and Indo-western wear. Attending these events helps me discover new brands and source unique pieces for my clients.
This quick video is a snapshot of the different hats I wear as a stylist. You'll see me in action during a personal shopping session, on the set of an editorial shoot, and mentoring my team. It’s a glimpse into the dynamic and multifaceted world of fashion styling.
About Behind the Scenes: The Styling Process
Every 'perfect' shot you see on set is held together by double tape, careful pinning, and a team that knows exactly where to stand to catch the light. When you hire me, you are not just getting an outfit. You are getting a partner who manages the logistics, the dry cleaning, and the last-minute crisis. My goal is to handle the stress so the only thing you have to worry about is how you feel in the clothes.
How We Build a Look
Styling is a dialogue, not a monologue. Over my 20 years in this industry, I have learned that a great look is 20 percent creativity and 80 percent execution. Here is how I work:
1. The Vision It starts with a deep dive into the story. Whether it is a commercial ad shoot or a red carpet appearance, I need to know what we are trying to say. We build mood boards to align on the narrative, colour palette, and the specific vibe of the event.
2. The Sourcing Hunt This is where my network comes in. I go to designer studios and PR agencies to pull options. I do not just pick what looks nice on a hanger. I look for pieces that fit the body type and the camera requirements. We always aim for a 'Rule of 3' approach—three distinct options for every character or lead so we have flexibility on the day of the shoot.
3. The On-Set Reality This is the part most people do not see. My team and I are the ones on the floor, steaming garments, fixing hems, and managing continuity. If it is a 12-hour shoot for a brand like Kalpataru Estate, we are there from the first shot to the last, ensuring the clothes move exactly how they need to.
Why Process Matters
I have seen too many shoots stall because of wardrobe malfunctions. That is why I include assistant support in my packages. We manage the returns, the ironing, and the delicate draping. If you are looking for a fashion stylist in Mumbai who treats your project with the same care as a big-budget film, let's talk. Tilgul ghya goad goad bola (Eat sweet, speak sweet)—that is the only way to build a real connection.
