If they struggle with resource guarding or feel overwhelmed by other dogs, we catch it here, not during your actual vacation when you are miles away.
Why I Insist on a Trial Stay
Many pet parents ask me why a trial stay is mandatory. It is not because I want to make things complicated or squeeze out an extra booking. It is because I run an open, cage-free boarding system. When your dog stays with me, they aren't stuck in a kennel; they are living in a home, mingling with other dogs, and following a pack structure.
If a dog is not used to this level of freedom, or if they have underlying anxieties they haven't shown at home, the stress of a new environment can trigger behavioral red flags.
What Happens During the Assessment
During this visit, I look for a few critical things:
- Pack Compatibility: How does your dog approach other dogs? Are they overbearing, shy, or aggressive?
- Human Trust: Do they look to a human for guidance, or do they immediately go into panic mode when you leave?
- Resource Guarding: How do they react when food, toys, or sleeping spots are introduced?

Sometimes that means more private training sessions first, or perhaps realizing that a boarding kennel is actually a safer environment for a skittish dog than my open-plan home.
