Owls are masters of disguise, often hiding in plain sight within our urban green spaces. Join me as we explore the quiet, mysterious world of these nocturnal hunters and learn the patient art of capturing them without disturbing their natural rhythm.

A Brown Fish Owl peers out from the hollow of a tree in Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, its bright yellow eyes shining from the darkness.

A family of three Spotted Owlets huddles together on a branch in Surajpur Wetlands, showcasing their curious and social nature.

About The World of Owls

Finding an owl is never about rushing or chasing; it is about knowing the signs. When we spot a Spotted Owlet in places like Surajpur or a Rock Eagle Owl near Delhi, we never use flash or get too close. The secret to that perfect shot is waiting for the bird to acknowledge your presence naturally, keeping your distance, and prioritizing the bird's comfort over the angle of your lens.

Mastering Owl Photography

Photographing owls requires a different mindset than shooting other birds. Because they are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, you are often fighting low-light conditions. In my workshops, we focus on the technical side of this: managing high ISO settings on your Nikon or OM-1, understanding back-button focus for tracking subjects in the dark, and using wide apertures to let in maximum light.

Local Species and Habitats

We don't need to travel far to see incredible diversity. Around the National Capital Region (NCR), I regularly track:

  • Spotted Owlets (Athene brama): Often found in small colonies at Surajpur Wetlands. They are social and offer great opportunities to observe behavior.
  • Rock Eagle Owls (Bubo bengalensis): The stealthy giants often found in rocky, arid terrain around the outskirts of the city.
  • Brown Fish Owls: Master predators of the water, which we occasionally spot in protected reserves like Pilibhit or along quiet creeks.

Conservation Through the Lens

Every image here tells a story, but it also serves a purpose. By documenting these birds, we bring attention to the fragile ecosystems they inhabit, from the biodiversity parks of Bhondsi to the wetlands of Greater Noida. My goal is to teach you how to observe 'Chota Ullu' (Spotted Owlet) and other species not just as subjects to be photographed, but as vital parts of our local environment that deserve protection.

If you want to move beyond Auto mode and learn how to ethically approach and document these fascinating creatures, come join one of my birding photo walks. We focus on fieldcraft, gear settings, and species identification in the real world.

I am PGahlot. I spend my days roaming wild places with my camera, searching for the creatures most people walk right past. For me, photography is the best way to protect these birds, because you cannot save what you do not know exists.
