About Welcoming a New Family Member
I always suggest that we introduce your pet to the baby’s scent—like a blanket or clothes—a few days before the shoot. It helps reduce that 'who is this new person?' anxiety, especially for pets who have been the only 'baby' in the house for years. This way, we are not forcing an interaction but letting them get curious at their own speed.
These sessions are deeply personal because they represent a massive shift in your family dynamic. Whether you are announcing a pregnancy or bringing your newborn home, your pet is going through it right along with you. I focus on creating a space where they feel secure, not pressured.
We will spend time letting them explore the new baby gear and the scent of the nursery before we even pick up the camera. My goal is to capture the protective gaze, the cautious sniffs, and the moment they realize they have a new sibling to watch over. If they feel like taking a nap or playing with their favorite toy instead of posing, we follow their lead.
I have worked with all kinds of 'first kids,' from high-energy Labradors to shy, older rescues, and I know that the best photos are the ones that happen when we stop trying to direct them. We can shoot in your living room, the nursery, or your backyard—anywhere that is a familiar sanctuary for your pet.
