Our Philosophy of Play-Based Learning
We believe play is a fundamental right, not a break from learning. Here are the moments that define our community—from hands-on family workshops to the immersive experiences we create for educators and children.
We believe learning should be an adventure, not a chore. Here, you see the pure, uninhibited joy that is at the heart of everything we do. This is what happens when children are free to explore, get messy, and learn with their whole hearts.
No boring talks, just joyful play. This is our promise, whether you are an educator looking for fresh ideas or a parent seeking meaningful ways to connect with your child. We design hands-on experiences that make learning feel alive.
Ever wondered what a conference built entirely around play looks like? Here are five reasons why our signature event, The Playbook, is an experience unlike any other. It is a space to connect, create, and rediscover the power of playful learning.
Our community is the heartbeat of Papagoya. This glimpse into our annual Family Day shows the energy and connection that happens when children, parents, and our Playmakers come together to celebrate, dance, and simply be joyful.
At Papagoya, every child gets to shine. Our theatre showcase is a celebration of participation over perfection, where learners build confidence, collaborate, and bring stories to life on stage in front of a supportive audience.
This is what professional development looks like at Papagoya: a circle of passionate educators and parents learning and growing together. We foster a collaborative environment where ideas are shared and the community lifts each other up.
Unstructured, child-led free play is where the deepest learning happens. It sparks imagination, encourages collaboration, and empowers children to solve problems in their own unique ways, building confidence and independence.
About this collection
What you see in these images is our pedagogical approach in motion, where learning is integrated rather than siloed. Whether it is our parent-child weekend workshops at our Cambridge Layout or Frazer Town centers, or our Micro-school showcases, we move away from rote methods. We create these spaces for you to experience what happens when children and adults are given the time and tools to explore, experiment, and solve problems together.
Why Play Matters
At Papagoya, we don't just teach; we facilitate discovery. Our work spans from early childhood programs in Kumara Park to professional development for teachers who are tired of lecture-heavy training. When we say our workshops are hands-on, we mean it—you won't find boring talks here. You will find interactive installations, collaborative problem-solving, and a focus on educator wellbeing.
Our Core Experiences
- Parent-Child Workshops: These 90-minute sessions are designed for you to be a play partner. We rotate themes like Kitchen Science, Messy Art, and Analogue Play, providing all sustainable materials so you can just focus on connecting with your child.
- The Playbook Festival: This is our annual flagship event. It is a full-day immersive experience for educators and families, moving beyond the podium to feature puzzle floors, story circles, and live installations. It is where we put our 'no boring talks' promise to the test.
- On-Site Pedagogy Training: For schools and organizations, we bring our expertise to you. We focus on practical, actionable modules like setting up low-cost learning environments, managing risky play, and documenting child development without the pressure of testing.
The Papagoya Community
We are a community-led space. From grandparents joining our family days to parents leading sessions on AI in education, we value the diverse perspectives that everyone brings to the table. Our 'Playmakers'—the team of educators behind these programs—are here to support, listen, and experiment alongside you. If you are looking for a place where learning feels alive and deeply human, you are in the right place.
Papagoya
I'm Helen, and I founded Papagoya because I saw how much our schooling systems needed a shake-up. My team of Playmakers and I spend our days turning laundry into games and garages into science labs, because we know kids shine brightest when they are just allowed to be kids.
