Conceptual and Serene Charcoal Artworks

Beyond portraits, my charcoal work explores landscapes and atmosphere. These pieces aim to capture the silence and scale of nature through deep shadows and texture.

I call this piece 'Eternal Peaks'. This large-scale landscape captures the majestic and timeless nature of the Himalayas. The black and white medium allows the focus to be on the raw, rugged textures of the mountains and the dramatic sky.

This artwork depicts a solitary figure on a boat, set against a softly glowing sun. I used charcoal on linen to create a serene and contemplative mood, with the water's reflection adding a sense of calm and depth.

'Haze' is an atmospheric piece showing a sailboat emerging from a thick fog. My goal was to use soft, blended charcoal to capture the quiet and mysterious feeling of being alone on the water.

This video gives a glimpse into the creation of 'The Temptation'. It zooms in to show the meticulous, stroke-by-stroke process of building up layers of charcoal and graphite to achieve a hyperrealistic texture.

Here you can see my hand at work, using a pencil to add the finest details to the lips in 'The Temptation'. This close-up view demonstrates the level of precision required for hyperrealism.

About Conceptual & Serene Art

When I create large scale conceptual pieces, I prefer primed linen canvas over traditional paper. The fabric texture allows me to build greater depth and manipulate light more effectively, which is vital for scenes involving water reflections or complex atmospheric haze. This medium creates a subtle 3D effect that gives these landscapes a commanding presence in any room.

For me, charcoal is a medium that demands patience. In this series, I focus on the interplay between stark light and deep shadow to evoke a specific mood, whether it is the cold stillness of the Himalayas or the quiet mystery of a sailboat emerging from fog. Each piece is a deliberate study of texture, built up layer by layer until the image feels tangible.

Why I use Linen Canvas for Large Works

While A3 or A2 archival paper is perfect for detailed portraiture, my larger works (3ft x 4ft) require the structural integrity of primed linen canvas. The fabric weave holds charcoal dust and graphite powder differently than paper, allowing for richer black tones and a more distinct tactile finish. These pieces are moisture-resistant and durable, designed to serve as central, statement-making elements in your home or office space.

The Commission Process

If you are looking for a conceptual piece, we will begin by discussing the specific mood you want to capture. You might have a location in mind—a place that holds personal significance—or a particular atmospheric condition you admire. Because these works are originals, I spend significant time preparing the surface and ensuring the fixative layering protects the work for long-term display. Once the piece is completed, I handle the crating and shipping to ensure it arrives in the same condition as when it left my studio in Mumbai.

I am Om Thadkar. My art is a focused study on stillness, textures, and the silent narratives within a scene. I do not just draw what I see, I draw what I feel, whether it is the quiet majesty of a mountain or the mystery of a fog-covered sea.
