Personal Charcoal Portraits for Your Family
I transform your cherished photographs into timeless, hyperrealistic charcoal keepsakes. Every stroke is dedicated to preserving the unique spirit and character of your loved ones on premium archival paper.
This is a close-up of a commissioned charcoal pencil portrait. The focus was on capturing a kind and thoughtful expression, with careful attention to the fine lines and the reflection in the glasses to achieve a lifelike quality.
Here is the finished and framed version of the portrait. I believe the presentation is as important as the art itself, and I use professional framing with a neutral mat to complement the monochrome drawing and ensure it is ready to be displayed.
This is another example of a commissioned portrait, professionally framed. My process involves working closely with clients to understand the person I am drawing, which helps me to bring out their warm and approachable nature in the final piece.
It is always a pleasure to see my art find its home. Here I am with my clients, who commissioned a series of family portraits. Seeing their satisfaction with the final collection is the most rewarding part of my work.
About Personal & Family Portraits
When we begin a commission, I start by reviewing your source photos to ensure they translate well into the medium of charcoal and graphite. Because I use 200gsm acid-free archival paper, these portraits will not yellow over time, making them a genuine family heirloom rather than a temporary sketch. My process includes one digital preview round before the final sealing, ensuring the expression and features capture the person you know and love.
Creating a portrait is a collaborative journey. Whether you are looking for a singular hyperrealistic head-and-shoulders composition or a complex dual-subject piece, the foundation remains the same: 30-plus hours of dedicated, detailed shading. I do not simply replicate a photograph; I focus on the interplay of light and shadow to bring out the depth in a smile or the thoughtful gaze in an eye.
The Process and Technique
- Single Subjects (A3): Ideal for capturing individual personality. I use a mix of hard and soft charcoal grades to render everything from fine skin texture to the subtle reflection in glasses.
- Dual Subjects (A2): These require careful composition, often merging different source images into one harmonious piece. I pay specific attention to fabric textures—like the weave of a saree or the cut of a suit—to add realism.
- Longevity: Every finished piece is protected with multiple layers of museum-grade fixative spray. This prevents smudging and ensures your commission arrives ready to frame. I provide advice on mounting and neutral matting, as the presentation is integral to the final impact of the monochrome work.
Based in Mumbai, I ship my work across India using specialized, protective packaging to ensure the charcoal does not smudge during transit. If you have an idea—a family tribute, a memorial, or a personal milestone—let us discuss how we can turn your photographs into a tangible piece of art.
