My Journey in Art: From Newspaper Cartoons to Live Sketches
I turned a childhood obsession with newspaper cartoons into a profession that takes me across India, one caricature at a time.
This video captures a conversation where I talk about how I turned my passion into my profession. I discuss my inspirations, the joy of seeing a client's happy reaction, and how this skill allows me to travel across the country for various events, all sponsored by the client.
About My Journey in Art
When I sit down to sketch a live caricature, I am not just drawing lines. I observe the little things, like the way you smile or a specific expression you carry, and I make sure those details land on the paper. It is what makes each souvenir a memory rather than just a drawing.
My path to becoming a caricature artist was not a straight line. It started with simple inspiration from the cartoons in the Times of India. I used to look at them and think about how they captured so much meaning in a few strokes. That curiosity eventually led me to a guru, and then from gifting small sketches to friends, I found myself travelling from Mumbai and Pune to cities like Jaipur, Shillong, and Raipur to draw at events.
Why Live Caricatures?
I believe art should be a two-way street. At events, whether it is a wedding, a corporate gig, or a college fest, I set up a simple station. The magic happens in those few minutes where I am sketching a guest. We talk, we joke, and I turn their features into a fun, exaggerated version of themselves. It breaks the ice and gives everyone something tangible to take home.
My Approach
- Real-time Observation: Whether I am using watercolor or classic black and white, I focus on the unique spirit of the subject.
- Adaptability: I have worked in dim venues using battery-operated lights and managed high-volume crowds at college expos by sticking to quick, high-speed sketches.
- The "Story-Cature" Method: For workshops, I combine storytelling with drawing techniques to help beginners get past the fear of the blank page. It is all about making the process approachable and fun.
If you see me at an event, come by for a chat. My goal is to keep this art form alive and spreading, one smile at a time.
