Our Design Philosophy: Architecture That Solves Real-World Problems
At MQA, we believe architecture is about people, not just blueprints. From optimizing compact homes to master planning greener cities, our work is defined by transforming site constraints into meaningful, sustainable living spaces.
Good design solves real problems. Here, I explain my approach to designing a 350-square-foot apartment for a multi-generational family, focusing on creating flexible, multi-purpose rooms that provide both privacy and a sense of home.
On Earth Day, our architects shared their vision for sustainable design. We believe in creating environmentally responsible buildings through strategies like green roofs, natural ventilation, and mixed-use master planning to build a greener, more livable future.
We believe in a hands-on approach to understanding materials. This video shows our team participating in a lime plaster workshop at our office, exploring traditional techniques and textures to bring more depth and authenticity to our projects.
About this collection
When we look at a 350-square-foot site, we do not just see a small room; we see the chance to create two distinct, flexible living zones. Our process involves designing multi-purpose rooms that serve as essential living areas during the day and transition into private sleeping quarters by night, ensuring that even in compact footprints, every generation in the family maintains their privacy and comfort.
Architecture as a Human Solution
For us, architecture is about creating opportunity from constraints. Whether it is a boomerang-shaped site or a tight 350-square-foot apartment, we approach every project by first understanding the people who will inhabit the space. We do not design just for square footage; we design for the life that happens inside those walls.
Sustainability in Practice
Our commitment to the environment goes beyond theories. In our urban design work, such as the master planning for Bhendi Bazaar, we prioritized walkability and public health by widening narrow streets and planting over 500 trees. We believe that true sustainability involves strategies like natural ventilation, passive cooling, and maximizing daylight, which not only makes a building energy-efficient but also creates a healthier, more livable city.
Hands-on Craftsmanship
We stay involved in the details. Our team regularly conducts hands-on workshops, such as exploring lime plaster applications, to better understand how traditional materials can add depth and authenticity to modern projects. This curiosity drives our approach to mixing materials like wood, marble, and metal to create spaces that feel genuine and stand the test of time.
How We Work
- Site-Centric Approach: We do not use cookie-cutter plans. Every design is shaped by the land, the climate, and the specific community needs.
- Flexibility & Utility: We specialize in transforming small spaces with modular solutions like sliding partitions and multi-functional furniture.
- Long-term Value: We build for generations, ensuring the structural layout remains functional and relevant as your family and lifestyle evolve.
