Retail Design for the Gulmohar Lane Flagship Store
Designing this 4,000 sq. ft. flagship store was about moving beyond the traditional showroom. I envisioned a space that mirrors a home, where industrial history meets modern warmth.
A rendering of the entrance area of the Gulmohar Lane store, featuring a classic black-and-white checkerboard floor. The space is set up like a grand foyer, immediately establishing a sense of home and elegance.
This view shows a curated retail display that feels like a chic living room. The design uses clothing racks and shelving to blend fashion with furniture, creating a holistic lifestyle experience.
A cozy dining nook vignette within the store. The combination of patterned chairs, a rustic wood table, and glass partitions creates the feeling of stepping into a private dining room.
This rendering shows a formal waiting area or living room setup. The design uses classic furniture silhouettes, elegant wallpaper, and paneled walls to create a sophisticated and timeless atmosphere.
A small home office vignette, framed by industrial-style glass doors. This setup helps customers visualize how Gulmohar Lane's pieces can create a functional and stylish workspace at home.
A quiet corner of the store designed as a reading nook or small seating area. The curved sofa and warm lighting create an intimate and inviting space for customers to pause and relax.
This rendering shows a hallway connecting different "rooms" within the store. The paneled walls and glass partitions guide the customer journey while offering glimpses of the spaces ahead.
A living room setting that showcases a complete furniture collection. The high, exposed-beam ceiling of the original mill building is contrasted with soft, neutral furnishings and warm accent lighting.
A bedroom vignette featuring a four-poster bed. By creating these complete room sets, the store allows customers to experience the furniture in a realistic and aspirational context.
This view shows the transition from a lounge area to a retail display section. The consistent checkerboard flooring ties the different zones together, creating a cohesive flow throughout the store.
About Retail Experiences: The Gulmohar Lane Flagship Store
The primary challenge with large retail floor plates is avoiding the feeling of a cold warehouse. For the Gulmohar Lane flagship, I structured the 4,000 sq. ft. area into intimate living, dining, and bedroom vignettes. This layout encourages visitors to move through distinct, home-like zones, creating a sense of discovery that keeps the experience personal rather than transactional.
Expanding on the design narrative, the Kamala Mills site offered an industrial canvas—exposed beams and expansive skylights—which we balanced with softer, residential-scale treatments. We chose a classic black-and-white checkerboard floor to anchor the ground plane, providing a consistent visual thread that connects the disparate room setups.
The furniture displays themselves function as silent guides. Instead of aisle-based navigation, customers wander through a series of connected rooms, each defined by partition screens and varying lighting profiles. We integrated biophilic elements and warm, ambient cove lighting to soften the industrial shell, ensuring the products—the furniture—remain the protagonist.
Technical coordination was paramount. Managing the heat load from high-density retail lighting required precise HVAC integration, while the custom display systems needed to accommodate the brand's diverse product range without cluttering the floor. By focusing on flow and materiality, the store invites a tactile interaction that mirrors the brand's identity: comfort, style, and quiet elegance. This project serves as a clear example of how commercial architecture can foster a genuine connection between a product and a potential homeowner.
