The Science of Art: Ceramic Glaze Explorations
Glaze is more than just color. Under a microscope, it reveals a living landscape shaped by heat, minerals, and time.
This isn't a distant galaxy, it's a ceramic glaze seen under a microscope. Every speck and crack is a tiny universe created inside the kiln. The more you zoom in, the more magical pottery becomes.
Look at the way the glaze has bubbled and pooled, creating these beautiful, translucent circles. This is the unpredictable chemistry that makes every glazed piece truly one-of-a-kind.
A microscopic view of bubbles frozen in the glaze. It’s a whole world of texture and depth that is invisible to the naked eye, a secret story told by the fire.
This image looks like a frosty, alien landscape, but it's actually the crystalline structure of a glaze after firing. It’s a beautiful reminder of the science behind the art.
Another peek into the microscopic world of glaze. The texture here is so rich and complex, like a mineral deposit on a faraway planet.
The deep blues and bright white specks in this microscopic view are the result of different minerals melting and reacting in the kiln's heat. It’s pure alchemy.
About The Science of Art: Glaze Explorations
These aren't just photos. They are a peek into the mitti (clay) transformation inside my kiln. When I layer glazes, I am essentially managing a chemical reaction that changes under extreme heat. If you have ever wondered why two identical mugs come out with slightly different patterns, it is because of this alchemy. This constant unpredictability is exactly why I love working with clay.
When you look at a finished ceramic piece, you see the form. But the real magic happens in the hours of firing at 1220°C. In my studio, we use high-fire stoneware and premium layered Amaco glazes, which are formulated to react with each other and the minerals in the clay body.
What you see in these images are the results of that reaction—bubbles, crystals, and textures that form as the glass melts and flows. I don't aim for factory-perfect consistency because that would mean stripping away the soul of the pottery. Instead, I focus on the process of learning how to control, or sometimes just respect, how the glaze behaves.
Whether I am crafting a custom mug or a large sculptural vase, the goal is always to create something that tells its own kahani (story). If you join me for a session, you will get to experience this part of the journey yourself—from the initial hand-building to the anticipation of pulling your piece out of the kiln. It is a slow, quiet, and deeply rewarding process that connects you back to the earth.
