The Cheerville Farmhouse: 100% Cement-Free Architecture
This off-grid farmhouse is where our sustainable theories become reality. Built by our all-women team, it stands as a living example of circularity without a single bag of cement.
This animated cross-section of the Cheerville farmhouse details the different natural building techniques used. It highlights features like stone masonry, shuttered deodar walls, and a bottle wall.
About Project Spotlight: The Cheerville Farmhouse
This project is our primary living laboratory for sustainable building techniques. It features specialized construction methods like bottle walls and shuttered deodar framing, all achieved without using standard industrial cement. If you are curious about how these materials perform, this structure provides the real-world evidence of our design philosophy.
The Cheerville Farmhouse represents the culmination of our research into circular construction. When we designed this space, our goal was to remove industrial dependence, meaning no cement, no standard steel reinforcements, and no grid reliance.
The structure relies on several specific methods:
- Bottle Walls: We incorporated repurposed glass bottles to provide structural strength while creating unique light diffusion.
- Shuttered Deodar Walls: Local timber provides the necessary stability and warmth for the farmhouse structure.
- Stone Masonry: We utilized traditional foundational work to anchor the home naturally into the landscape.
We use this property as a teaching site for our onsite workshops. Students do not just look at diagrams here; they see how we handled complex load-bearing requirements using rammed earth methods and earthbags. By studying this project, you get a clear look at how traditional building techniques can be adapted for contemporary, off-grid living. Every corner of this farmhouse was built by our team with the intention of proving that sustainable, natural construction is viable for the modern homeowner.
