Hands-on Sustainable Building and Earthen Architecture
We believe building is about more than bricks. Explore our journey of crafting homes with natural materials, empowering women in construction, and teaching ancient, sustainable techniques.
This is the heart of our mission. A view from inside an earthbag dome, looking up at the proud faces of the all-women team of masons who built it. This is what empowerment and hands-on learning look like.
"Nothing women can’t do. If you’ve got the will, you’ll get it done." This video shares the core belief behind our upskilling initiatives for women construction workers, showing them in action and speaking about their journey.
A look up into the sky from inside a nearly completed earthbag dome. This powerful image showcases the scale and beauty of what you can create with simple, sustainable materials like soil-filled sacks.
This animated breakdown shows how our sustainable designs come together layer by layer. It visualizes the integration of various natural building techniques, from the foundation to the solar panels on the roof.
The moment of truth. Watch as we de-shutter a rammed earth wall, revealing the beautiful, stratified layers of compressed soil. This is a key technique we teach in our hands-on workshops.
A close-up of the rich texture of a Thappi lime plaster wall. This traditional Rajasthani technique, taught in our workshops, creates a durable and breathable surface with a distinct, handmade character.
Here you can see the Wattle and Daub technique in progress. A lattice of bamboo is daubed with a mix of local clay and natural fibers, creating a strong and insulating wall using ancient methods.
A quick glimpse into a typical workshop day with us. It's a mix of focused learning, hands-on practice with techniques like rammed earth, and collaborative fun in a beautiful, natural setting.
About Featured
While our images show the final textures and structures, they don't capture the physical reality of the process. In our workshops, you learn that techniques like Tadelakt plastering or rammed earth are not just aesthetic choices; they are labor-intensive methods that require mastering the specific density and chemistry of your local soil and lime mixes to succeed.
Building isn't just about design for us. It is about understanding the land and the materials it provides. We founded Masons Ink to revive traditional building practices like rammed earth, wattle and daub, and lime plastering, proving that these methods are not only environmentally superior but structurally robust for modern homes.
Why We Teach Hands-On
We don't do theory-heavy lectures. Whether you are an aspiring architect or a homeowner interested in sustainable living, our workshops put you in the mud. You will learn to identify soil suitability for earthbag domes, understand how to set up formwork for rammed earth, and apply Rajasthani Thappi plaster with the same tools our master artisans use. We believe the only way to truly understand a material is to work with it until your hands are as tired as they are knowledgeable.
Building with a Mission
Our work is also deeply personal. We are challenging the gender disparity in Indian construction by training and empowering an all-women mason team. When you see our work at sites like Cheerville, you aren't just seeing sustainable architecture; you are seeing the result of a team that has transitioned from laborers to skilled leaders. We use upcycled materials—even animal hair in our wattle and daub mixtures—to minimize waste and maximize structural integrity. Our goal is to make cement-free, climate-responsive construction the standard, not the exception, by passing these skills on to the next generation of builders.
