Avant-Garde Photography for Unique Fashion Editorials
I use dramatic lighting, fisheye lenses, and mixed-media techniques to turn fashion concepts into stories. Let's create something that breaks the rules.
A full-length shot from the 'Peek-a-boo' series, set in a gritty, industrial-looking location. The harsh lighting and dark shadows create a mysterious, noir atmosphere.
An inverted image from a collaborative fashion editorial, creating a disorienting and surreal effect. The focus on the textured denim dress and the unusual composition is purely avant-garde.
A shot from 'The Last of Them,' a project about decaying aristocracy. The model poses on an escalator, blending futuristic fashion with a mundane urban environment to create a striking contrast.
An experimental portrait using a slow shutter speed and light streaks to create a fractured, energetic effect. The styling with leather gloves and layered jewelry adds to the edgy, high-fashion feel.
A close-up from 'Whispering Veil,' focusing on the custom pearl headpiece. The green light and the model's expression create an intimate and slightly haunting mood.
Another fisheye portrait where the model interacts with a textured handbag. The distorted perspective brings the viewer into the model's personal space.
A high-contrast shot against a blue tiled wall, using hard light to create deep shadows. The model's dark makeup and leather top contribute to the edgy, urban aesthetic.
A detail shot focusing on the vintage camera as a prop, tying into the 'Peek-a-boo' theme. The textures of the plaid skirt, leather top, and gridded gloves are prominent.
An image using motion blur from passing car lights to add a dynamic element to a dark, atmospheric scene. This technique enhances the feeling of a fleeting, candid moment.
A fisheye portrait of a model in a tailored suit, subverting traditional corporate attire. The wide-angle distortion gives the formal wear an unconventional, playful twist.
About Experimental & Avant-Garde
When we push into avant-garde territory, it is rarely about the standard commercial portrait. I often utilize fisheye lenses, long exposures, and motion blur to warp the perspective, pulling the viewer into a more raw, distorted version of reality. It is a high-energy process where we prioritize the narrative concept over perfection, creating images that challenge the typical fashion editorial mold.
My Approach to Conceptual Photography
I view the camera as a tool for inquiry. In this cluster, I move away from safe, catalog-style photography to explore the tension between the subject and the space they inhabit. Whether it is using the wide-angle distortion of a fisheye lens to disrupt a frame or incorporating 35mm film for texture, the goal is always to evoke a specific emotional response.
The Collaborative Process
Avant-garde work relies heavily on the team. I coordinate closely with stylists, makeup artists, and art directors to ensure every element—from prop selection to hair texture—serves the core narrative. We do not just show up to shoot; we build a visual language for the project. For clients, this means a rigorous pre-production phase where we storyboard every beat of the shoot.
Technical Expertise
My workflow is hybrid, mixing high-end digital precision with analog unpredictability. I frequently incorporate:
- Experimental Lighting: Using gels, projectors, and harsh, moody shadows to create depth.
- Dynamic Motion: Implementing motion blur and long exposures to capture a feeling of movement, especially in urban environments.
- Perspective Shifts: Using wide and distorted lenses to turn a standard outfit into a piece of abstract art.
Working Together
I primarily take on projects for fashion brands and magazine editorials that require a strong point of view. If you have a collection or a story that needs to be communicated through a non-traditional lens, let’s discuss the concept. I am based in Mumbai and Kochi and travel for specific project requirements.
Malavika Jayaram
I’m Malavika, and I see photography as a way to say something, not just look pretty. My avant-garde work is where I get to experiment with film and unconventional angles to find the narrative hidden in a shoot. It is about capturing a silhouette, a chemical reaction, or a fleeting moment that defies the usual.
