Playful Learning Foundations in Indian Classical Music
We turn the fundamentals of Indian classical music—raags, taals, and sargams—into a vibrant, hands-on playtime experience for children aged 6 months to 5 years.
Here is one of our favorite learning tools in action. We use these colorful, stackable blocks to introduce the sargam notes (Sa, Re, Ga, Ma), turning the fundamentals of Indian classical music into a fun, visual game for our toddlers.
Learning the basics of sargam is woven seamlessly into our class activities. As you can see, our trained vocalists use engaging visuals and songs to introduce musical notes, making the educational aspect of our program feel just like playtime.
About Playful Learning Foundations
We don't believe in boring lectures. In our sessions, we use custom-made sargam stacking blocks to turn the notes of Sa, Re, Ga, Ma into a building game, helping children intuitively grasp musical structures while they are busy playing.
At Little Ustaads, our methodology is built around the idea that music is a sensory experience before it is a formal skill. We know that children from 6 months to 5 years learn best when they are active, which is why movement, props, and instrument interaction are at the heart of our curriculum.
The Little Ustaads Method
Every session is designed to be pressure-free. We use movement circles with colorful ribbons and flags to help children internalize rhythm (taal). When we introduce concepts like raags, we do it through song and active engagement rather than explanation. Our instructors are trained vocalists who sing live, avoiding recorded tracks to keep the interaction human and responsive to the children's energy.
Hands-on Instrument Exploration
One of the most popular parts of our classes is the 'jam session.' We provide sanitized, child-sized instruments—mini tablas, manjiras, and dholaks—allowing toddlers to explore the mechanics of sound directly. This noisy, messy, and cheerful environment is where the connection between action and sound solidifies.
What to Expect
We run 10-session terms with small batches of 8-12 children to ensure each child gets proper attention. Whether it is your child’s first time hearing a classical tune or they are already humming along to Bollywood favorites, our environment is built for bonding and discovery. Parents are encouraged to participate, making it a shared experience that builds a foundation for cultural appreciation early in life.
