Building Essential Skills Through Play
Occupational therapy at Learning Matters isn't about rigid exercises or correcting deficits. We see every movement—from balancing on a beam to squishing dough—as an opportunity for your child to understand their body, regulate their senses, and build confidence in their own unique way.
This obstacle course is a full-body challenge that builds balance, motor planning, and focus. Our occupational therapists design these playful engagements to provide essential vestibular and proprioceptive input, which helps with posture, spatial awareness, and self-regulation.
Balance, coordination, and focus are all at play here. For a child, it's a game. For our therapists, it's a carefully designed engagement to strengthen the proprioceptive system, which is key for posture, coordination, and even emotional control.
Music and movement are powerful tools for development. Drumming helps build coordination, motor planning, and rhythm, while also serving as a joyful outlet for self-expression and sensory regulation.
An obstacle course is an invitation to problem-solve with the body. Here, children develop gross motor skills, balance, and coordination while navigating challenges in a fun, supportive group setting.
Using streamers during movement exploration encourages children to understand how their bodies move through space. This builds body awareness and coordination in a creative, expressive, and joyful way.
Following a beat with rhythm sticks is a playful way to develop listening skills, teamwork, and hand-eye coordination. These group music sessions are a core part of our movement exploration programs.
Jumping between hoops requires motor planning, balance, and concentration. We turn the floor into a game to make gross motor development feel less like work and more like an adventure.
About this collection
In our sessions, you will not find children sitting in rows completing rote tasks. Instead, we use our sensory gym, equipped with climbing walls, bolster swings, and tactile stations, to help your child develop motor planning, self-regulation, and the fine motor strength required for everyday tasks like writing, fastening buttons, or using cutlery.
We approach occupational therapy through the lens of neuro-affirmation. This means we do not see children as problems to be fixed or forced to conform to standardized benchmarks. Instead, we follow their lead, using their natural curiosity and interests to build the skills they need for daily living. Whether your child needs support with sensory processing, fine motor precision, or gross motor coordination, our sessions are designed to meet them exactly where they are in their development.
During our one-on-one sessions, our therapists utilize a combination of Reggio-inspired materials and movement-based activities to work on specific functional goals. This might look like strengthening a tripod grasp through playdough exploration or improving vestibular stability by navigating an obstacle course. Because we believe growth happens in the everyday, we prioritize parent partnership. Every session includes a brief parent handover, ensuring you leave with practical, manageable strategies to support your child's progress at home, not just within the center. We are based in Green Park and support children from infancy through the teenage years, focusing on strengths and celebrating every step of the journey.
Learning Matters
We are Learning Matters, and we believe a child’s natural way of moving and playing is their most powerful tool for growth. Our team doesn't rush the process; we slow down, listen to what your child needs, and create a space where they feel safe to explore their own potential.
