Bird Photography in Bengaluru: Wings in Motion

Chasing birds in flight is pure patience. From the first light at Sanky Tank to the wind over rocky terrains, I wait for that perfect moment when the shutter speed meets the action.

About this collection

Getting a clean shot of a Grey-headed Swamphen or a kite in flight is rarely just about my Nikon D3500. It is about being out by 6 AM, understanding where they roost, and standing still until the birds forget I am even there. It takes a lot of cold mornings to get these frames right, but when you catch that wing spread perfectly, it is worth the wait.

The Reality of Birding

People often ask me, 'Lalith, how do you catch birds in mid-air?' The answer is always: wait. It is 90% waiting and 10% action. I spend hours in places like Jakkar Lake or the outskirts near Ramanagara just watching. You learn the patterns—when the Purple Heron comes out to hunt, or which tree the Shikra prefers. It is a slow process, but that is where the best shots come from.

My Workflow

I do not believe in overly complex setups. My Nikon D3500 with a 300mm lens does the job because I have spent the time learning its limits. The magic, though, happens on my laptop. After a long morning shoot, I spend hours color grading and sharpening to remove city wires or distracting backgrounds. That is how a raw bird photo turns into the final, dramatic frame you see here.

Where I Shoot

I stick to Bengaluru’s urban water bodies for quick sessions—Sanky Tank is a personal favorite. For bigger raptors and more rugged action shots, I head out to the rocky edges of Turahalli or Ramanagara. Whether it is a calm silhouette at sunset or a high-speed flight shot, I am always chasing the next frame. Let me know if you want to join a session or capture a specific species—I am usually out every weekend.

Photography is how I breathe and heal. I do not just take pictures; I spend my early mornings in the wild, waiting for the light to hit just right. I am Lalith, and I am happiest when I am out with my camera.
