Shadows & Silhouettes: Capturing Bengaluru's Wild Moods

When the sun hits the horizon at places like Sanky Tank or Jakkar Lake, everything changes. I do not just chase the light here; I chase the mystery of the silhouette.

About this collection

Getting these silhouette shots is not about having the most expensive gear. It is about knowing exactly when the sun dips low enough to cast the subject against the sky. I spend about 30 minutes just scouting the right angle at the water's edge before the light fades, and I always underexpose in-camera to make sure those blacks are rich and moody.

There is something about a silhouette that tells a story without needing to show every single detail of a feather or eye. When I am out at lakes like Sanky Tank, I am looking for the shape, the posture, and the drama of the moment.

Technically, these shots are about discipline. I use my Nikon D3500 and 300mm lens to isolate the subject. Because I shoot during the golden hour, the light is changing by the second. I have to be ready to move because once that bird flies or the sun dips below the tree line, the opportunity is gone. It takes practice to know when to pull the trigger.

My editing process for these is quite specific. I focus on contrast and crushing the blacks. I want the subject to look like a solid, dark shape against a fiery or hazy sky. It is minimalist photography, but it forces the viewer to focus on the action—like a Great Cormorant taking off from a branch or a Myna resting against the setting sun. If you want photos that feel more like art and less like a textbook, this is the style we should go for.

I am Lalith, and my camera is my compass. I find my peace chasing the morning light on a freezing Bengaluru ride, turning quiet moments at local lakes into art.
