The Decisive Moment: Bird Photography Workshops
Learn to anticipate avian behavior and capture the split-second drama of the wild. Join my hands-on workshops in key birding hotspots to move beyond technique and develop your intuitive eye.
This video of an Oriental Darter catching and subduing its prey is a masterclass in patience and timing. Capturing such a sequence requires understanding the subject and being prepared, a key skill we develop in my workshops.
The spot-billed pelicans at Ranganathittu are incredible to watch as they fish. This handheld footage shows one scooping fish from the surface while in flight, a behavior we spend hours observing from our boat to get the perfect shot.
The whiskered terns of Navi Mumbai are aggressive pack hunters, and their aerial acrobatics are a true test for any photographer. This slow-motion footage reveals their incredible agility as they hunt in the golden morning light.
This moment was pure comedy and drama, which I call 'Shock & Awe'. A painted stork secures a fish while its colleagues, both egrets and another stork, look on in disbelief. Capturing such interactions is about being observant of the story unfolding before you.
A red-whiskered bulbul lands with its wings spread like an angel. Freezing this motion with perfect clarity is a technique we practice, focusing on shutter speed and focus tracking to create sharp, dynamic images of birds in flight.
About The Decisive Moment: Birds in Action
Capturing birds in flight is not about high shutter speeds; it is about anticipation. Whether we are on a boat at Ranganathittu or observing the wetlands in Navi Mumbai, I teach you to watch the behavior, not just the viewfinder. We focus on reading the cues—the slight shift in a wing, the sudden gaze—that tell you the moment is about to arrive. You will learn to hold your stillness, manage the changing morning light, and trust your instincts.
We go beyond the basics of camera settings. My 'Sense the Light' philosophy is designed to help you synchronize with the environment. When we are out at Ranganathittu or monitoring the wetlands, the goal is to become invisible. We study bird behavior—the dive, the landing, the interaction between species—so you are ready before the action happens.
The technical side is essential, of course. We will work with shutter speeds, AF tracking, and handling dynamic range in challenging morning light. Whether you are using a DSLR or a mirrorless system, I show you how to pull the best RAW data out of your sensor so your post-processing becomes simpler.
These workshops are intimate. Keeping the group size to 6-10 participants allows us to handle the nuances of boat safaris and field positioning without overwhelming the wildlife. You are not just there for a shot; you are there to practice dharna (concentration). It is about the patience required to wait for a painted stork to make its move or a darter to surface with its catch.
Remember, this is not a classroom setting. We will be outdoors, in the mud, or on a boat. We deal with real conditions. By the end of our time, my hope is that you stop chasing the 'perfect shot' and start capturing the living moment. It is a skill that takes practice, but it changes the way you see every bird you encounter, even in your own backyard.
