From the wetlands of Bharatpur to the savannahs of Tanzania, bird photography is an exercise in patience and precision. Join me to learn how to capture avian beauty in flight and detail.

The alpha of the skies. An African Fish Eagle swoops down to the surface of Lake Naivasha, its wings spread in a display of power and precision. Capturing birds in action like this requires fast shutter speeds and anticipating the moment.

The Grey-headed Kingfisher, a jewel of the savanna. I was lucky to find this one perched in perfect light, its vibrant colors standing out beautifully against the soft green background.

The Toco Toucan from the Pantanal is famous for its enormous, colorful beak. It uses this incredible tool to reach fruit on branches that can't support its weight, a fascinating example of adaptation.

The Sarus Crane, the tallest flying bird in the world, is known for its graceful courtship dances and lifelong pair bonds. This image, with its selective color, highlights the bird's elegant form against the misty backdrop of Bharatpur.

The Pied Kingfisher, a master of precision. Its striking black and white plumage makes for a beautiful subject, especially when perched against the deep blue of the water.

A symphony of ostriches. I love how their necks align in this image, creating a sense of symmetry and purpose. It’s a reminder to find beauty and order in the everyday scenes of the wild.

A Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater perches on a thin branch in Tanzania. These small, colorful birds are a delight to photograph, and capturing their delicate features requires a keen eye and a long lens.

A tiny Siberian Stonechat, a winter visitor to the grasslands of India. Birding is about appreciating all sizes, and capturing this little traveler was a wonderful part of my Jim Corbett expedition.

These images further showcase the diverse and beautiful birdlife we encounter, from the Grey Breasted Spur-Fowl in Tanzania to the elegant Sarus Crane in India.

About The Art of Birding

Bird photography demands more than just a long lens. It requires an intimate understanding of the subject's behavior, knowing exactly when a Kingfisher is about to dive or how to frame a Sarus Crane’s courtship dance. On our outings, we go beyond simple shutter clicking to master the subtle art of anticipating movement and handling challenging, dappled light, turning a split-second encounter into a portrait of pure grace.

When I teach birding, I emphasize the 'why' before the 'how.' Whether we are tracking the Siberian Stonechat in an Indian forest or documenting the Toco Toucan in Brazil, the process starts with stillness. Many photographers struggle because they rush the shot. I show you how to blend into the environment, use natural framing to minimize clutter, and adjust your shutter speeds to freeze high-speed action without losing the soul of the image.

We often shoot in places like Bharatpur, where the morning mist creates a perfect, moody canvas for the Sarus Crane. Other times, we are on a river in Africa, needing to predict the flight path of a Fish Eagle mid-dive. In both scenarios, the technical challenges are distinct. We do not just talk about gear settings; we practice 'reading' the bird. Does it bob its head before taking flight? Is the light highlighting the iridescent feathers or flattening them? We dissect these details on-field, reviewing our shots in the evenings to refine our workflow in Lightroom. If you want to move past record shots and start creating images that tell a story, this is where we begin.

I don't just guide tours; I share the field with you, crouching in the dust and waiting for the right light. My approach is hands-on, focusing on behavior, patience, and the technical nuance required to capture life on the wing. If you are ready to see birds not just as subjects but as individuals, let’s get out there.
