Jugalbandi is a dialogue between two classical styles. I love collaborating with artists from other traditions to create a fresh and harmonious experience.

A glimpse of "River and Mountain", my Jugalbandi performance with a Bharatanatyam artist. This piece explores the blending of two distinct classical styles to create a new, harmonious language.

Announcing my Jugalbandi performance with Sattriya artist Anwesa Mahanta. It is always an honor to share the stage with talented artists and explore the creative possibilities of our traditions.

About Jugalbandi & Collaborations

When I perform a jugalbandi, it is about finding the common rhythm between Kuchipudi and other forms like Bharatanatyam or Sattriya. It is not just about alternating turns on stage, but a live conversation where the dancers and musicians respond to each other in real-time. This dynamic energy makes every performance a one-time occurrence that evolves as we dance.

The Art of the Dialogue

A jugalbandi is far more than a technical display of skill. It is a live musical and rhythmic conversation. When I collaborate with artists like P. Praveen Kumar or Anwesa Mahanta, the primary goal is to respect the individuality of our respective styles while finding points of intersection. We explore shared themes, rhythmic patterns, and storytelling techniques to bridge the gap between Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam, and Sattriya.

The Role of Live Music

These performances depend heavily on the ensemble. Whether it is a mridangam, flute, or nattuvangam, the musicians are my partners on stage. In a jugalbandi, the music must adapt to two distinct styles. My rehearsals involve deep coordination with the ensemble to ensure that every transition—from a Kuchipudi Tarangam to a Bharatanatyam Tillana—is seamless and maintains the intended energy.

Why Collaborate?

Collaborations keep the art form alive and evolving. They challenge me to step outside my Vempati Chinna Satyam tradition and look at my own movements through the lens of a different aesthetic. These performances are ideal for festivals looking for variety, academic institutions interested in cultural exchange, or corporate events wanting a sophisticated, high-energy cultural segment.
