A multimedia Bharatanatyam production by Jayalakshmi Eshwar that weaves together Indian mythology, classical tradition, and the artistry of our weavers.

The official poster for 'Mix & Match', a multimedia dance production that bridges traditions, mythology, and the beautiful textiles of India. The concept and choreography are my own, bringing this unique vision to the stage.

Namaskar. In this video, I personally invite you to experience 'Mix & Match'. I explain the concept behind this challenging and rewarding production, which is my tribute to the incredible skill of India's weavers.

This video showcases highlights from 'Mix & Match', featuring sarees from all 28 states of India. You can see how we use dance to celebrate the legacy of weavers, from the vibrant textiles of Rajasthan to the elegant silks of Tamil Nadu.

A performance moment from 'Mix & Match', where dancers use a simple bamboo stick to represent the loom. The choreography integrates movements that evoke the process of weaving, spinning, and dyeing.

Here, I am performing a segment of 'Mix & Match', using a traditional saree as a prop to tell a story. Each textile in the production carries its own history and cultural significance, which we explore through dance.

A scene from 'Mix & Match' at the Triveni Amphitheatre. The use of fabric in motion is central to this production, creating fluid, dynamic visuals that pay tribute to the texture and flow of the saree.

Namaskaram. A personal invitation to the premiere of 'Mix & Match'. I share my excitement for this unique production that combines the classical idiom of dance with the rich topic of Indian textiles.

About 'Mix & Match': A Tribute to Indian Textiles

In this production, we move beyond just dancing; we treat the sarees themselves as active partners on stage. My dancers interact with the fabric to replicate the rhythmic motions of the loom, turning the choreography into a physical representation of the weaver’s labor. It is a sensory experience where the tactile nature of the textile meets the precision of Bharatanatyam.

The genesis of 'Mix & Match' (Mishranam evang Melanam) came from a simple question: How do we honor the hands that create our most treasured attire? Taking a topic as vast as India's textile heritage and condensing it into a 90-minute stage production was, truthfully, one of the greatest challenges of my career.

We blend Bharatanatyam with Chhau to bring a raw, earthiness to the movements, representing the labor of the loom. You will see dancers move with bamboo sticks to simulate weaving, while original music—composed with Carnatic influences—pulls the audience into different regions, from the silks of Tamil Nadu to the weaves of Rajasthan.

It is not just a dance; it is a multimedia experience. We integrate visual storytelling and projection to create an immersive environment. Whether it is performed at the Triveni Amphitheatre or a larger stage like Kamani Auditorium, my focus remains on the 'Guru-Shishya Parampara'. My senior disciples join me to ensure that even with modern experimentation, the classical foundation remains rock-solid. If you are looking to commission a thematic production that merges classical art with a social or historical narrative, this is the approach I bring to the table.

I am Jayalakshmi Eshwar. My life in dance is defined by the teachings of my guru, Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale, and a constant curiosity about how tradition evolves. In 'Mix & Match', I bring together my classical training and a deep respect for our artisans to create something that feels both ancient and entirely new.
