Practical Illusion Design for Ads and Films
I help creative agencies and directors bring impossible shots to life without relying on CGI. We build real, physical illusions that are designed to look perfect on camera.
A shot from the final HDFC Life advertisement where we made the lead actor levitate. My job as an illusion consultant is to ensure the effect is seamless and believable, integrating perfectly with the director's vision and the story being told.
Here I am with my partner Praveen on our way to the HDFC Life shoot. We were hired as the creative consultants for the levitation effect. We designed, tested, and executed the entire illusion within a week, working closely with the fantastic team at Schbang to pull it off.
This custom card trick was designed for a corporate client, RG Foods. Whether it's for a social media video or a large-scale ad campaign, I can develop bespoke magic that highlights your brand's message in an unforgettable way.
About Illusion Design for Ads & Films
When we tackle a creative brief, I build a rough proof-of-concept in my studio before we ever step on set. This allows us to test the physics, lighting angles, and rigging requirements in a controlled environment. It saves your production team valuable time and ensures that when the cameras roll, the effect functions exactly as intended, whether you need a complex product levitation or a seamless character reveal.
How We Make the Impossible, Real
My approach to illusion design is rooted in the idea of finding that perfect santulan—the balance between a great-looking visual and the technical constraints of a film set. I don't believe in relying on post-production to fix what can be done practically.
The Collaborative Process
Whether you are working on a high-budget ad campaign or a tight-turnaround film shoot, I treat the process as a partnership. We start with a deep dive into your script to spot the moments that need that extra bit of wonder. Once we have the concept, I handle the engineering—designing the rigs, sourcing the materials, and conducting weight tests to ensure safety and reliability.
On-Set Execution
I am not just a consultant who leaves after the planning phase. I am present on the shoot day to manage the rigging, guide the talent on how to move to sell the illusion, and work alongside your DOP to lock in the camera angles that hide the secrets. If we need to reset the rig for a second take, I am there to make sure it happens quickly so your production stays on schedule.
Why Practical Effects Matter
When actors or products interact with real, physical rigs, it changes how the camera captures the moment. It gives your audience that genuine feeling of 'How did they do that?' that CGI often struggles to replicate. If you have an idea that seems impossible, let's look at the mechanics and figure out how to build it.
