Q1

What kind of magic show should I book, and is my child old enough for one?

From about 4 to 12, book a kids' show: 45 minutes of comedy and big tricks, with children called up to help, for about ₹5,500 to ₹10,000. For grown-ups, at a first birthday, a client evening or a wedding, book a magician who goes round the tables, or a mentalist (a mind reader) on stage. A magician at the tables starts at ₹6,000, and a mentalist's stage show at about ₹35,000.

Q2

How much does a magician cost in Bengaluru?

A 45-minute kids' birthday show costs ₹5,500 to ₹10,000. Sound and games are usually extra. At the tables, three of the five magicians we spoke to charge ₹6,000 to ₹15,000, and a mentalist starts at ₹35,000. At an office, an hour of magic starts at ₹15,000 and a mentalist costs ₹35,000 to ₹70,000. More than half of the 12 parents who gave us their own budget hoped for ₹3,000 or less, about half the lowest price we found.

  1. Only the set

A relative with a magic set from a toy shop

An uncle or an older cousin does a few simple tricks for the children. They know him, and there's nothing to arrange

  2. ₹5,500 to ₹10,000

A kids' show, about 45 minutes

For the magician only, except Sankalana Decorations, a decorator, whose card says only 45 minutes for ₹5,500. ₹6,000 at Mohammed Idris; from ₹10,000 at Pradeep Tyson; ₹10,000 at Rajan for a longer show, up to an hour and a half with an assistant. This leaves out Sharan Kuttappa, who quotes ₹80,000 to ₹1,00,000 for any private event

  3. ₹6,000 to ₹15,000

A magician at the tables, at a family function or wedding

Coins and cards, one group at a time. ₹6,000 at Idris, ₹10,000 an hour at Tyson, ₹15,000 for about three hours at Rajan. A mentalist starts higher: ₹35,000 for 40 minutes at Akshay Singh

  4. ₹15,000 to ₹70,000

    A show for a company

An hour of magic: ₹15,000 at Rajan, ₹25,000 on a big stage. A mentalist: ₹35,000 for 40 minutes at Akshay Singh, ₹35,000 to ₹70,000 at Tyson. The photo is Badhsha the Mentalist on a hotel stage

Q3

Is a ₹10,000 birthday magician better than a ₹6,000 one?

Both shows are about 45 minutes. The extra ₹4,000 pays for a magician who calls himself a corporate entertainer and makes the birthday child his helper. For a room of children who want to laugh, the ₹6,000 show does the job.

Q4

What does a magician's price include, and what costs extra?

The price covers him, his props and travel inside most of Bengaluru. Sound and games are usually extra: a magician's speaker and mic is ₹1,000 to ₹3,000, and games after the show add about ₹2,000 to ₹3,000. Ask how many minutes of the booking are magic.

Q5

Can I have a magic show at home in a flat?

Yes. He needs a clear patch to stand and move, with the children on the floor in front. Most families who write to us want it at home or in a clubhouse, for 10 to 25 children. Start once most guests are in, before the cake.

Q6

How do I know a magician is good, and right for my crowd, before I pay?

Watch a clip of him at a real party with the sound on, to hear whether the room laughs, and check he speaks your guests' languages. If you book through a party company, ask which magician will come.

His own reel. It is a close-up on a lawn, not a party show. Whoever you pick, ask for a longer clip from a party like yours, with the room's sound, so you hear whether the children laugh.

Q7

Can I still get a magician this weekend, and what if one of us cancels?

Sometimes: two of the five magicians we spoke to can come the next day if they're free. Expect to pay 30% to 60% upfront. Cancel on the day and three of them keep the advance, and Idris charges the full fee. Earlier than that, it depends on the magician.

Before you pay, settle these eight

  1. How many minutes of the booking are magic
  2. Who brings the speaker and mic
  3. That he comes himself, by name
  4. The act list, and anything to leave out: fire, birds, selling magic kits
  5. The children's ages, the birthday child's name and who's shy
  6. The start time: once most guests are in, before the cake
  7. A gate pass for him and his props
  8. The advance, and what happens if either of you cancels
