Sitar and Zitar Showcase: Classical Heritage to Modern Fusion
Experience the depth of traditional Indian classical music blended with the high-energy, modern sound of the electric Zitar.
Here is my take on the beautiful Zitar solo from the song 'Dil ka kya'. This is a great example of how the electric zitar can bring a modern, soulful voice to popular Bollywood melodies.
A short improvisation in Raag Malkauns on the acoustic sitar. This is one of the foundational Raags we explore in my classical lessons, focusing on its deep and meditative character.
A fun, unplugged jam session outdoors with a fellow musician on guitar, playing our version of 'Bolna'. Learning to collaborate and blend the sitar's sound with other instruments is a key part of my fusion lessons.
After a great jamming session with the very talented Ayushmann Khurrana. It's always a pleasure to connect and create music with other artists.
Here I am, lost in the music during a live performance in Ahmedabad with my electric zitar. Capturing the energy of a live show is an experience like no other.
A close up look at playing the beautiful song 'Laal Ishq' on the sitar. In my lessons, I break down how to play popular and intricate Bollywood songs like this one, note for note.
An impromptu classical jam in Raag Bihag with my friends on Santoor and Sarangi. This shows how different traditional Indian instruments can create a rich musical conversation together.
About this collection
When I teach online, I don't rely on standard laptop audio. I use studio-grade condenser microphones during our video calls, ensuring you hear every subtle micro-tone of the Raag or the specific effects of the Zitar with absolute clarity, making our virtual lessons feel like an in-person session.
My musical journey is built on two pillars: the deep, meditative foundations of the Banaras Gharana and the expansive, electric possibilities of modern fusion. Whether you are aiming to master the complexities of Raag Malkauns or looking to pick up a popular Bollywood number for a performance, the process is fundamentally the same: technical rigor paired with musical freedom.
My Approach to Learning
- The Foundation: My PhD in Music from BHU isn't just a credential. It is a curriculum. We start with the basics of sitar posture, finger movement, and note precision to ensure you have a clean sound before adding complex ornamentation.
- The Transition: If you are moving from classical to contemporary, I show you how to adapt traditional techniques for the Zitar. We break down signal processing and tone shaping, so you can play fusion music that sounds professional, not just loud.
- Customized Feedback: Because I limit my batch sizes and offer 1-on-1 sessions, I can catch habits before they solidify. You aren't just learning notes; you are learning how to listen and improvise.
Why the Zitar?
Many students ask why I incorporate the Zitar. The electric sitar allows us to bridge the gap between old-world melodies and modern production. It is a tool for expression. In our sessions, I help you understand when to keep it acoustic for a soulful, raw sound and when to plug in for that rock spirit. We cover everything from traditional Alap and Jod to studio recording tips for your own projects.
Hardik Verma
I grew up in Varanasi with the sitar, but Mumbai taught me to experiment with the Zitar. Whether you want to master a challenging Raag or learn a Bollywood cover, I bring the same rigor to every student, from beginners to experienced players.
